First, read my affiliate disclosure.

As a breastfeed-until-they’re-in-braces type, I never thought I would spend so much time writing about formula! (Here’s our Safe Formula Guide, here’s where I review Honest Company Formula, and here’s where I take two European formulas head to head. But I try to research the topics and products that you’re most worried about, and I hear you loud and clear: formula is number one! So here is more information that I hope will help those of you looking for the healthiest infant formula on the market.

Even Better Stuff: Holle Lebenswert Formula (Stage 1)

I’ve previously stated that if I were formula feeding, I would go with Holle (from Germany). I am happy to report the discovery of a new formula that’s even better than original Holle, which is Lebenswert formula (stage 1 only). Lebenswert features a shorter list of ingredients and one other major upside over regular Holle.

Holle Lebenswert Stage 1 Is Sweetened with Lactose

holle-lebeswert from Gimme the Good Stuff

One of the the biggest problems with Holle’s original formula is that it contains maltodextrin, a cheap sweetener derived from rice, corn, or potatoes that is less similar to the natural sugar found in breast milk. Lebenswert’s stage 1 formula is free of maltodextrin, relying instead upon lactose (which more closely mimics breast milk) to lend sweetness to the formula. Moreover, Lebenswert adheres to Bioland organic guidelines for farmers and manufacturers. These guidelines are even more stringent than the European Union’s Eco-Regulation; you can read more about them here.

Lebenswert does still contain palm oil and canola oil (called “rapeseed oil”), but it is definitely what I would choose if I were formula-feeding. Here’s a complete ingredients list of the stage 1 formula: Organic skimmed milk, organic whey powder (partly demineralised), organic vegetable oils (palm, rapeseed, sunflower oil), lactose, potassium chloride, calcium, vitamin C, sodium chloride, ferrous gluconate, vitamin E, zinc sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, copper sulphate , Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6 , Vitamin A, manganese sulfate, folic acid, potassium iodate, vitamin K1 , sodium selenate, vitamin D.

PLEASE NOTE: Lebenswert formula in stages above 1 DO contain maltodextrin. While these are still “Good Stuff” and on par with original Holle, the review I am providing here only applies to Lebenswert stage 1.

Where to Buy Lebenswert

Because it’s from Germany, Lebenswert is not FDA approved, so it can be challenging to obtain here in the U.S.

I’ve vetted several places to purchase this formula, and am happy to have established affiliate relationships with the following sellers:

  1.  Little Bundle
  2. Organic Baby Food 24 (based in Germany)

Thanks for sharing this post. I totally appreciate your point that Lebenswert formula is better than Organic formula. This formula contains no cheaper sugar.

  3. Lebenswert Stage 3 Avatar

I Appreciate your Point, Lebenswert milk is an organic skimmed milk formula and it can be given to infants from birth onwards up to six months. I contain multiple vitamins such as vitamins E or many more which is really helpful for babies.

  4. Lebenswert Stage 1 Avatar

I like your content very much. I agree with you Lebenswert milk is better than other milk brands for babies. It is highly nutritious and very similar to mother’s milk. You can feed your baby with Lebenswert milk and make him healthy. Thanks for such a valuable content.

Hey! Can I ask you what you think about this product for my 9 month old who I think is lactose intolerant? She seems to be having issues from any dairy products. I have found a formula that is dairt free – Hipp Baby HA. Doesn’t this Lebenswert have milk in it? Do you know if it’s lactose free milk?

In the list of ingredients I’m not seeing Vitamin B12. Is the fact that this formula does not contain Vitamin B12 a concern for infants under 6 months whose only form of nourishment comes from milk?

Hello! Thanks for all your research. I am thinking about ordering Lebenswert for my son to start trying to supplement at some point – it would be my first choice. He has a dairy protein sensitivity where I have not been able to eat any dairy in my diet while breastfeeding. Do you think because Lebenswert uses lactose as a sweetener he wouldn’t do well with it? My daughter also had this milk protein allergy and it seemed by 6 months she was ok with it, but I used Baby’s Only LactoRelief and never tried anything else. Just curious if you think babies with dairy sensitivity would be ok on this or would do better with Holle? Thanks so much!!

    Hi Maia,

I have recently found out that Holly introduced Stage Pre also uses lactose as its sweetener, i would like to know if it is suitable for a nine months old baby and onward to use? If so, when should I switch to stage 2 or 3 or just stay with the infant formula if she is doing well with it? Thank you.

I can only recommend Lebenswert. My Baby is super happy with it and never had any problems regarding digestion since I switched from breast feeding to Lebenswert. I have to admit that first it was kind of a hassle to get a reliable source. Diana said she bought it from organicbabyfood24 but as they are located in Germany it took over 3 weeks to receive it. Luckily I found another shop based in the US that doesn’t charge for shipping and delivery takes usually only 1-2 days. I am super happy with their services and can only recommend it as they have the best prices compared to all the other shops I found so far. organicbabyfood.shop if you are looking for the best pricing/service in the US, this is where you’ll get it.

    Hi Maia,

I noticed that you mentioned in one post that you would use Holle Goat Milk formula for supplementation only (if I understood correctly). I’ve been considering using this as baby’s only source of nutrition from 3 months on. Any reason why you personally wouldn’t?

Several retailers in Germany ship to the US. And much much cheaper than both the websites mentioned in the article. They typically charge around $7 for a box (based on the exchange rate as of today) plus $40 shipping. It takes 1 month from placing the order to receive the package in the US. I bought 15 boxes for $144 all in cost. The Holle website lists quite a few retailer websites – email them and they will let you know if they ship to the US.

How does one prepare the Holle/Lebenswert formula? I have the instructions, but my question is more specific: how in the world am I supposed to cool the boiled water down to 50 degrees Celsius? Stick a thermometer in the water after I take it off the stove and stare at the thermometer until the mercury goes down to 50? I am European and I understand the metric system as well as Celsius degrees, so that is not the issue–but rather, how on earth can anyone get to that precise temperature? I am happy to approximate, obviously, since it is well known that lukewarm water dissolves anything better than room temperature water. But is approximating acceptable? Uber thanks.

I understand that Lebenswert 1- 0+ months doesn’t have maltodextrinbut Lebenswert 2- 6+ months. But what makes the two formulas different?(is the nutrient difference really that much?) Is it ok to give Lebenswert 1 to a 10 month old?

    Back story:
My son was exclusively breastfeed for 9 months. We had latching problems an i had to pump so when I saw breast feed I guess I mean feed breast milk. ( I wasn’t lucky enough to have the pleasure of actually breastfeeding, but you do what you can right?) Any who, after 9+ months my milk supply has gone down significantly and my son has depleted his frozen milk stash. 🙁 Formula has been my only option for the past two weeks because Im lucky if I express 10 oz a day. Im really worried about the chemicals in conventional formula and being that I want through so much just for my son to have breast milk I don’t want to give him just anything. Please help!! Its pretty urgent 🙁

I’ve been going back to your blog for insights during the last couple of months. Thanks so much for doing all the research!

I’ve been feeding my LO Holle stage 1 and he’s approaching 5 months in 2 weeks. I’m planning to give him Lebenswert stage 1 now, but I still have 8 boxes of Holle stage 1. Can I mix 50/50 of the Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1 in the same bottle to feed him? I’ve been looking around online for Lebenswert nutritional info from its package, but couldn’t find anything. I’m trying to compare the Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1 nutritional values. Also, I couldn’t locate Iron on the Holle box – does it list under a different name ? I didn’t see eisen listed, which I understood is iron in German….

    Your input is greatly appreciated!!

My 5 mo old has been ebf until this week I supplemented with one bottle (5oz) of Lebenswert 1 on Monday and have done so everyday. However on Friday and Saturday she developed hives all over her body after drinking the bottle. On Sunday she threw up and the hives also came back.
She isn’t itchy or fussy. And the hives go away after a few hours on their own. Has this happened to anyone? Where do I go from here?

Sorry for such a delayed reply but thank you for your answer. I tired Holle Hypoallergenic and Baby’s Only….the same thing happened, she would break out in hives. Anyway, I am still breast feeding but supplementing with one bottle a day of Baby’s Only Soy – it’s the only one that doesn’t cause hives! We think it is a milk based allergy. We will be revisiting milk soon at 12 months. If anyone else has had this issue I would love to hear the outcome.
But Maia thank you for responding! It means a lot.

Please help! I’m am in the process of purchasing Some formula and I need to choose between Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1. My son is 3 months old and I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding. Initially I had an over production of milk and I was pumping 10oz or more from each breast. However, with recent stresses my milk supply has been steadily decreasing and I can’t bear to hear my son cry because he’s not fully satisfied or because it takes a bit of time for my milk to come down when he’s ready to eat. My concern is the Lactose in Lebenswert. My son seems to be gassy and therefor uncomfortable and id hate to compound that issue. But the maltodextrin or sugar used in Holle doesnt seem appealing either. He’s taking vitamin d drops, will I need to get him probiotics once he starts using formula? I plan to continue breastfeeding, I have herbal/organic tea that seems to be helping but as I wait for my supply to increase I need to feed him adequately. Please help!!!!!!!! -Lisa

Hello, I heard lebenswert is the best option out there but after researching I have some unanswered concerns I hope you can answer?

    1. Hipp was found to have high aluminum levels, because of their foil packaging? So Im assuming lebenswert has the same issue because its also in foil? Any testing done for lebenswert?

    2. Lebenswert had a recall 2 years ago due to atropine and scopalamine and clostridium spores contamination. How did you handle the recall? Did you speak with them to hear if they corrected their practice? How would you handle a future recall?

    3. According to a german testing site, “testberichte,” lebenswert has high levels of 3-MCPD… Which can cause tumors. Have you heard or found anything regarding this/ them trying to reduce levels?

I found lebenswert was the “best” of the best, however with all these red flags, are there other products you are aware of that may be better??

Have you reviewed Sammys milk yet??? Waiting for your review please!!!

Thank you, hope to hear from you soon!

    Hello Maia,

Thank you for all the information you provide on your website. I could not seem to find a promised review of Baby’s Only Whey protein formula on your site so I figured I could ask my question here. I understand that Lebenswert is one of the best formula options but my concern is that it has palm oil. The Baby’s Only whey formula seem to have gotten through a change and they don’t have Taurine in the ingredients unlike their regular Dairy formula. Although they still have soy lecithin and soybean oil in there. My question is what’s a bigger concern as ingredients in formula: palm oil ( that apparently forms “soap” in baby’s gut) or synthetic ingredients( if there’s any left in Baby’s only whey protein formula)? And if there’re any synthetic ingredients in the Baby’s Only whey formula can you please point them out?

As a concerned father I wanted to get the best formula I could after my wife had to supplement due to low milk supply. My search led me initially to holle and then switched to lebenswert and I am very pleased with both. I made my first 5 or so purchases from organicmumchkin.com and was happy with the service receiving my orders in about 3 days every time. However at $30 per box it was putting a dent in the wallet so I explored other options. Although very hesitant I placed an order from biologish24 for 25 boxes and was prepared to wait up to 40 days as others have due to customs. I am happy to say that my order actually arrived to my doorstep on the east coast exactly 2 weeks after placing the order. I was nervous about the purchase up until it arrived but am glad to share that everything went like clockwork and the best part is I saved a ton of money! With the shipping fees it came out to about $12 per box, a huge savings. I know some have not had such a good experience ordering from overseas with their packages bring held by customs but I am extremely satisfied after my first order and I estimate I saved about $400 buying direct from Germany. I have no affiliations with the site and if needed I would order from organicmumchkin.com again but just trying to share some money saving advice.

If you consider that they are both sweetened with Lactose and the Baby’s Only is a third of the price (on $10 on amazon for approx 360 g Baby’s Organic vs $30 on organicmunchkin for 500 g Holle Lebenswert) and that it is widely available in the US… what are the benefits to choosing Holle Lebenswert Infant Formula? I feel like I’m missing something, but I’m not sure what. Thanks so much!

Lebenswert uses milk from biodynamic farms (which is even better than organic), and does not contain soy–the Baby’s Only with Whey (which is the version of BO that doesn’t contain rice syrup), has soy oil and also soy lecithin. These are the two major advantages to Lebenswert.

    Maia,

I just discovered your page and want to commend you for your passion towards helping other mamas find healthy solutions for our little ones. I am a mother of two and one more due in August ’16. After breastfeeding the first two exclusively for 12 months each, I have made the decision that I will formula feed our newborn because I now work full time. I am becoming more and more comfortable with this decision as I read about organic formulas, but I could really use some advice from you as well as other moms to figure out this formula thing.

First of all, I have made the decision to use Lebenswert stage 1 formula based on all the great reviews I’ve read and the obvious lactose factor.

    Questions…

**My husband bought me a Baby Brezza and I am wondering if anyone knows about using the European formulas with this machine.
**What kind of water do most of you use to mix formula? From my research, babies DON’T need fluoride, so I’m looking for a solution. Bottled spring water perhaps? Many “non-crunchy” moms I speak with say they just use tap water…?
    **Bottle recommendations?
**Lastly, what is the shelf life of Lebenswert 1 if I were to order in bulk?

Thank you all so much for your advice and opinions. I know that I will need to go over all this with my pediatrician when the baby gets here, but I would like to bring him a “plan” to approve of.

      Hi there-
I’m hoping others will chime in, but for bottles I recommend glass or stainless steel, and the Pura is my top choice (since it converts to a sippy, straw, and big kid cup). https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/pura-kiki-insulated-bottle-with-nipple/

I recommend you use filtered water to avoid too much fluoride. More here:

Hello, I am currently feeding my 5 month old son Lebenswert stage 1 formula. I am a germaphobe and our city water here is extremely chlorinated due to the “brain eating ameba” that circulates every summer/on hot days. I use the Gerber Pure Water. It has NO fluoride. This is my second child. For my first I used the Nursery Water with the purple label as the pink labeled one has fluoride. The purple labeled one has none. Hope that helps!

    Hi Maia,

Thank you so much for all your research! I am wondering about your thoughts on the advantages of the demeter certified biodynamic cows in the holle 1 formula (where the cows still have their horns–I’ve heard this produces the most nutritious milk-even over organic cows without their horns) versus the benefit of the lactose in the lebenswerth 1 formula? My understanding is that the bioland certification of the lebenswerth doesn’t necessarily mean the cows would still have their horns. Basically, weighing the sugar substitute issue over the highest nutritional milk available. What are your thoughts? Thank you so much!

    1. Maia James Avatar
      Maia James

      Hi Kathleen-
I’ve debated this exact issue myself, and ultimately feel like it’s a toss up. I guess I’d choose Lebenswert if it were my baby, but I do think there’s a lot of value in the biodynamic milk!

      1. Sarah Avatar
        Sarah

just a quick question, this is my issue as well.. which one to choose. What exactly is so bad about maltodextrin in the original Holle?… and do you think the lower fat content in the lebenswert is something that could be an issue? If the milk is more nutritional in the original Holle, maybe thats why it has more fat content?

        1. Maia James Avatar
          Maia James

Maltodextrin is a sweetener usually made of corn and has a very high glycemic index. As for the fat, I would definitely take that question up with your pediatrician:).

          1. Sarah Avatar
            Sarah

But you would be ok with feeding your baby the lower fat than required by the FDA? Im just trying to understand if im being over worried about it. Lebenswert has 3.1g of fat… FDA required more than 3.3g. My pediatrician is stupid and thinks that formulas here are fine… they are no help lol

It looks like Lebenswert stage 1 is the best choice to go with, but of course it’s also the one that’s not available. With that in mind, which would be the next best thing? Holle stage 1 or Lebenswert stage 2 (I have an 9 month old and would like to wean her from breastfeeding).

    1. Maia James Avatar
      Maia James

They are basically identical, but I would probably go with Lebenswert since its milk is biodynamic. In terms of what age Stage 1 vs. 2 is appropriate, I would ask your pediatrician.

      1. Katie Avatar
        Katie

An important note here though that I found in my research is that Holle Demeter Stage 2 vs. Holle Lebenswert Bioland Stage 2 is that *starch derived from corn is an ingredient in the Demeter, however it is NOT an ingredient in the Lebenswert Bioland. This is a notable difference between the stage 2’s when compared across Demeter vs. Lebenswert Bioland. I think if choosing between Demeter or Lebenswert Bioland for stage 2, based on this one ingredient, I would choose Lebenswert Bioland. Otherwise, for stage 2, both Demeter and Lebenswert Bioland have maltodextrin. If maltodextrin is an issue, then yes, I agree that Lebenswert Bioland stage 1 is best choice, as long as you are ok with baby’s iron levels past 6 months(stage 2 supposedly accomodates for higher iron).

    Dear Maia,

I am 32 weeks and live in South America, but will deliver my baby in Europe I had contacted Holle in Germany regarding Lebenswert stage 1, and I was told they do not sell this formula outside Germany. So I am puzzled how everyone is buying from online retailers outside Germany?

Since I am in Europe, I thought I take advantage and buy the formula in bulk to last me for the first 6 months, it is also considerably less expensive to get it from Europe. I found a company http://www.biologisch24.com who carries Lebenswert and was planning to order from this retailer. First how many boxes do I need for the first 6 months? I am also concerned of its shelf life/expiry date.

I am planning to breast feed, but I want to have a back given my past experience of breast feeding.

On a different note, if you were to choose between the honest company formula and Baby’s organic which would you choose?

    Thanks,

      Hi Betty-
      To answer your questions:
      1) Lebenswert is sold by online retailers buying it from Germany and reselling it. 2) I am not familiar with the biologish24 website you referenced. 3) I am not sure how much formula you need (and I haven’t formula-fed my own kids so can’t even give you anecdotal advice on this!). I would ask your pediatrician. 4) If it were my child, I would go with Baby’s Only Whey formula over Honest Company.

Also, regarding the issue of skim milk – in the US, we are told that babies need fat…good fat for brain development. From what I am reading about their cows being on pasture etc…does their skim milk (holle) contain more fat that the conventional skim milk in the US? I am trying to figure out why they would specifically use skim milk vs whole milk.

      Hi Diana-
I know, it’s all very confusing!

Here’s the fat content per 100ml prepared formula:

      HiPP 1- 3.5g
      Leb 1- 3.1g
      Holle 1- 3.6g

Earth’s Best, for instance, has 5.3g of fat in a 5 oz serving. If I did the math correctly, the fat content is very similar in all 4 products. It seems that Holle 1 actually has a higher fat content than Earth’s Best… Make sense?

Thanks for all your amazing research. It is so helpful! I haven’t been keeping up w/my 3 month old’s appetite and finally ordered Lebenswert from Beyond Organic Baby … everything seems legit with them, the box came only a few days after I placed my order. When i opened the outer shipping box though, I discovered 4 of the 5 boxes of formula were not sealed on the bottom. This could just be from the glue losing adherence due to temperature or something (?). I’m not sure if I should be concerned. I mean, if it were a scam, they could alway open up the bottom of the box carefully and re-glue it anyway, right? The bag inside the box is a silver foil-type bag like some crackers come in. Thank you for all the wonderful research. Thanks to your hard work, it made formula selection for me so much easier – bio leberswert #1 all the way. Along those lines, my sister-in-law lives in Germany and she just had a baby about a month ago. The Germany healthcare system provides a doula for post-hospital support to all interested citizens and the “consensus” is that the PRE version of the formula is the way to go (regardless of brands) and that number 1 is the follow on. Oddly enough, the hospitals use aptamil pre and it’s much more expensive than the organic stuff, so i’m not sure where that fits into the equation. Regardless, I can’t find any source to confirm PRE use on any US sites or where to buy this level of formula should it turn out to be better. Have you heard about this in your travels? Thanks again.

p.s. If organicmunkin turns out to be genuine, it would make buying formula substantially cheaper and easier. No more product limits and no more invisible/visible forms adjusted daily. Fingers crossed on the vetting !!

Hi Jim! I am sorry, but I don’t know anything about PRE formulas…I dug around a little after seeing this comment, and asked some of the European formula “experts” I know for insights, and came up empty. Aptamil isn’t organic (as I’m sure you know), so I don’t typically recommend that one. I wish I could be more helpful re PRE formula, but I’m going to keep digging and report back if I discover anything.

I do have some good news though–Organic Munchkin is legit, so I would feel comfortable buying formula from them here: http://goo.gl/EG9HNB

I am also interested in learning more about Pre formulas. Can’t seem to find any info on the difference between stage 1 and Pre.
Organicmunchkin.com is a great website. Can’t say the same about littleworldorganics.com littleworldorgqnics formulas are overpriced and unfortunately Lacey is always short in stock. On the other hand, I ordered several times from Peter and their formulas are definitely authentic. My mom brought Holle from Europe when she visited us and I was able to compare to the one from the website. Identical.

Thanks so much, Angie, for your kind words about my site. My research suggests that the x-rays are not a concern. Here’s more on that: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/01/12/145107755/why-x-rayed-food-isnt-radioactive-and-other-puzzles.

If you want to avoid maltodextrin, HiPP does not contain it. I don’t have updated numbers on the aluminum issue–I hope to be able to track this down!

    Hi,

I was wondering what the inside packaging is like for Lebenswert? I know the holle stage 2 comes in two portioned packages in the box, which allowed me to not waste formula when only using it once per day. It does expire after 2 weeks so 2 packages allowed 1 box to last a month for us.

    Thank you ,

      Hi Laura-
There is 1 foil pouch inside that makes about 166 fluid ounces of formula.

    Hello Maia,

We were fortunate enough to get Lebenswert from the great team at LittleWorldOrganics. Unfortunately, our son has not done well with it. He has quite a bit of gas and is crying all day and constantly straining to push it out. We tried Gripe Water to help him but it didn’t work. We spoke to our pediatrician who recommended Mylicon as a first try, that didn’t work either. She finally recommended we switch to Similac Alimentum, which we did not want to do but she verified that he should not be crying and straining as much as he does. Out of desperation, we tried the Alimentum and it definitely worked so we’re thinking it may be that our son is lactose intolerant. Is there another version of Holle/Lebenswert that you would recommend as an alternative to Alimentum? Thanks!

      Maia James

      Hi Charlie-
I’m sorry to hear about your son’s trouble with Lebenswert! I am neither a doctor nor a nutritionist, so my only suggestion is to have your doctor look into the ingredients of the other “Good Stuff” formulas (which, by definition are typically not soy-based) and see if he/she thinks the ingredients would be appropriate. Check out the Safe Infant Formula Guide for those brands. (And you could ask about Baby’s Only soy formula too). https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/safe-infant-formula-guide/

    Hi,
I tried to give my 3 weeks old Lebenswert 1 twice in addition to BM. However, on both occasions he spat up, and on the second occasion he cried a lot even after spitting which made me believe his stomach did not take the formula well. Could you recommend an alternative? I hate to say but my son gets Enfamil twice a day and every passing day makes me uncomfortable. I heard that Baby’s Only is not that great on stomach either (many reported cases on constipation). Another reason I want to be cautious is that I dont want to be changing formula again and again.

    Thanks a lot.

    1. Maia Avatar

I would ask your pediatrician about the stomach sensitivity (and what ingredients might be best for that specific issue), but the formulas that I think are Good Stuff are Baby’s Only, Honest, HiPP, Holle, and Lebenswert. Best of luck!

I’ve used Hipp with with now 14 month old and loved it, but I’m expecting another baby this month and considering lebenswert because of aluminum levels found in Hipp. Although I’ve read that it has less fat content as Hipp and stage 1 Holle. Should this be cause for concern? Also, the study that tested aluminum in European formulas didn’t include Holle, so thinking it might be relatively high as well seeing as how the packaging is similar. What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Maia James Avatar
      Maia James

I would ask your pediatrician about the fat and if he/she thinks it’s a problem for your baby. And yes, I agree that there is a good chance HiPP and Holle have similar aluminum levels because of seemingly-identical packaging, although contamination could happen at some other point in the production process. I’m hoping that Holle will do some independent testing at some point and reveal the results!

The use of maltodextrin is so the milk is not too sweet and better for babies with lactose sensitivities. If your baby had only a mild sensitivity to lactose it might not be as evident with Holle, where with Lebenswert it might be. We offer both on our website. http://www.barebottoms.us

Hi! My six month old son has been on Holle 1 just about since birth and has done great. However, I’d love to transition him to Lebenswert since it does not contain maltodextrin (I know this now thanks to YOU!). My question is whether there’s any chance he might be sensitive to the lactose in Lebenswert? He was quite a gassy baby but not so much anymore, so I’m scared to rock the boat. Do you think that if he’s done fine on Holle 1 that he would do fine on Lebenswert? I am thinking that if he was truly lactose intolerant that it would have shown up in his digestion of Holle 1? Thanks!

      Maia James

So sorry for the delay! I just saw this comment. Did you try switching to Lebenswert?

    2. Erin Avatar
      Erin

We’re transitioning our son from Holle Stage 1 to Lebenswert… right now we’re at 50/50 mixture. He was initially definitely gassier than normal and just a tiny bit fussy but it’s normalizing now! His poops are looser but I think that’s because, according to our doc, lactose keep things moving through your system (by design… that’s why breast milk has lactose…)

Holle Stage 1 was AWESOME too BTW (everyone commented on how he had so little tummy issues…). I also think the Dr Brown bottles helped with that…

      I hope this helps!

      Hi Allison-
There isn’t brown rice syrup in Holle formula (including Lebenswert). Brown rice syrup is found in Baby’s Only formula, but it contains undetectable levels of arsenic. Their new whey formula doesn’t contain it at all. Thanks!

Thanks for always keeping the formula info up-to-date for us! I’ve read all of your articles about Hipp/Holle. Is it safe to say the new formula is better than the old for stage 1?

What should we buy for stage 2 and 3? Is there a difference between old and new for 2 and 3?

    Thank you! Love the posts!

    1. Maia James Avatar
      Maia James

      Hi Anthony-
I am not sure why there are the price differences–some of it has to do with the shipping costs, which depends on which European retailer the importer is buying from. I indeed prefer Lewbenswert Stage 1 to Holle Stage 1, and for 2 and 3 I think they are about the same. I personally would feel comfortable feeding my baby Lebenswert Stage 1 (or any stage 1 formula) for the duration of the time they received formula. Here’s an article that may be helpful: http://www.hipp.co.uk/Blog/post/Follow-on-milks-e28093-to-feed-or-not-to-feed.aspx

We used the Lebeswert stage 1 from 2 months on. At five and a half months our son became very disinterested in the bottle, which could have been for several age appropriate reasons. We started our son on the Holle Stage 2 (our choice after careful consideration) after a few weeks of him eating half to 3/4 of his usual bottle, and he immediately was back to his regular number of ounces. This made me think that he may have needed the next step formula, just as Breast Milk adjusts to accommodate the needs of the nursing child. I am not a doctor, this is just my opinion.

I’ve been feeding my baby Lebenswert Stage 1 starting 9 mos. old and decided to go with this b/c of the lactose ingredient instead of maltodextrin. He is 10.5 mos. now and he still take the bottle really well. But since he’s more active I am currently debating whether or not I should switch to Stage 2 or 3. Does it have more calories or nutrients for an older infant?

Per my little research, Demeter does not allow its cows to be dehorned whereas Bioland has no such restrictions, which might affect the microscopic structure (Hagalis crystal analysis of milk) of milk and hence the difference in price, I guess.

This company is wonderful! I had an issue with delivery of my first order, it was accidentally left outside the wrong apartment, and they reimbursed my entire cost. I was so pleased with their customer service that I felt more than comfortable going back to them for future orders – they follow through on their commitment to offer quality products and ship them to the US with no hassle, and it’s made all the difference!
It’s by far the best formula we’ve tried (and we’ve tried quite a few organic formulas from the US). It dissolves easilly, and it’s friendly on our little one’s digestive system. In terms of cost, the total including shipping costs, is quite comparable to what I was paying for organic formula here in the States, so the choice for us to keep going back to Organic Baby was an easy one!

I have been using Lebenswert stage one for several months now and have never boiled the water. However, I do buy purified water. If I were using water from the tap, I would boil it just to make sure there was no bacteria and such. This formula mixes super easy in any temperature. You don’t really even have to shake it. I just swirl it around a bit and it mixes great. Very different from formulas I used with my first baby.
