Resources for California Wildfires

Our hearts are absolutely broken for anyone who has lost a home during the horrific LA fires. We appreciated Cup of Jo’s roundup of useful resources and the best places to donate. She’s also matching donations if you’re able to contribute.
For those of you in areas with poor air quality, here’s what experts (and we!) recommend:
- Stay Indoors: Keep windows and doors closed. If you don’t have an air filter, turn on your air conditioning (with a clean filter).
- Use an Air Filter: If you can, get an air filter. This guide reviews and ranks the best ones, but right now, any filter that can be delivered quickly (ideally several for larger homes) is a good choice. Here are the best brands available via Amazon Prime. In terms of affordability, check out Blueair. If you want an Austin (our top pick), we recommend the Healthmate Plus for wildfire smoke. If the cost is prohibitive, hit reply and we can offer a sliding scale.
- Wear a Mask: If you have an N95 left over from the pandemic, now is the time to use it (when you go outside). Regular cloth or surgical masks won’t filter out fine particles.
- Avoid Adding to Indoor Pollution: Don’t burn candles, and minimize the use of your gas stove, if possible.
