Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Where does it come from?

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

The Problem with Yards

Chemical fertilizers and pest control sprays are not only dangerous for our kids and pets who play in our yards. These toxins can also be devastating to wildlife, including birds, pollinators, and all the organisms–large and microscopic–that give life to the soil.

Moreover, American lawns annually consume approximately 20 trillion gallons of water, 80 million pounds of pesticides, 90 million pounds of fertilizer, and 600 million gallons of fossil fuels (source). It’s also estimated that all those pesticides and fertilizers kill 7 million birds each year. (And these stats only apply to lawns, meaning they are not inclusive of the resources used to maintain flowers, shrubs, trees, and gardens!)

Creating a more sustainable, non-toxic yard is a worthy undertaking, but requires a new understanding and view of what a yard really is.

Good Stuff

We call jarred baby food Good Stuff if the product is organic; made mostly or entirely from whole ingredients (versus purees and flours); and has a simple ingredient list and no weird additives.

Beech-Nut Organics

Beech-Nut Organics jarred baby food is Good Stuff. They use whole fruits and veggies (versus purees or concentrates) and use minimal temperatures and indirect heat in their processing and cooking.

Ingredients are very straightforward; many of their purees have just fruits and/or veggies. Some have lemon juice concentrate added as a preservative.

I don’t love that some of Beech-Nut’s blends have some grain flours instead of the actual grains, but these ingredients are minor. Be sure to check the label if you need to avoid gluten, because the oats in these jars aren’t officially gluten free. Also, this Organic line is a small portion of Beech-Nut’s offerings–a lot of their conventional packaging gives organic vibes, but I don’t call the non-organic products Good Stuff (more on this below).

Beech-Nut Organics

Okay Stuff

Okay Stuff is organic but has more purees and flours as primary ingredients, rather than the whole food.

Earth’s Best

As I mentioned above, we call some of Earth’s Best jarred baby food Good Stuff. That said, most blends are just Okay Stuff, thanks to a lot of ingredients that are fruit or vegetable puree and puree concentrates, rather than the whole food. For example, their Apples jar has “apple puree concentrate” as the primary ingredient. We know that Earth’s Best can do better, because many of their competitors use actual apples for this product.

Earth’s Best doesn’t make any claims about using less heat at any stage of processing, perhaps because of their reliance on these purees and concentrates. This is a letdown, given that all of their baby foods are organic. They also use mostly grain flours instead of whole grains.

Bad Stuff

Alba Botanica’s spray sunscreen smells so good, but contains chemical sunblock ingredients, including homosolate, as well as phenoxyethanol and alumina.

Aveeno has done a brilliant job marketing itself as natural. Unfortunately, even their zinc formula contains a bunch of gross ingredients, including PEG chemicals. Aveeno sunscreen was also recalled after it was found to be contaminated with carcinogenic benzene in this study.

Banana Boat makes mineral suncreens, but they still contain alumina, PEGs, and phenoxyethanol.

Cerave Baby Sunscreen Lotion contains PEG chemicals and phenoxyethanol.

Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby Mineral Sunscreen lotion contains PEGs and propylene glycol.

Blue Lizard‘s “mineral-based” kids’ formula contains chemical sunscreen ingredients in addition to zinc oxide. It also contains PEG chemicals and phenoxyethanol. Their Baby Mineral Sunscreen is free of the chemical sunscreens, but still contains PEGs and phenoxyethanol.

Most BabyGanics sunscreens are loaded with bad ingredients such as alumina, octinoxate, phenoxyethanol, polysorbate-60, and alumina. If you’re going to go with Babyganics, definitely choose their mineral formula.

Kiss My Face makes a range of sunscreens, and some are better than others. The worst of them contain chemical sunblockers. Even their mineral formulas contain phenoxyethanol and alumina and fragrances in some cases.

Raw Elements sunscreen is contaminated with carcinogenic benzene, at least as of this 2021 study.

Seaweed Bath Co. SPF 60 spray touts its “natural scent” and non-aresol can, but it contains homosalate.

Sun Bum was found to be contaminated with benzene, an established carcinogen. But! Their Glow face formula doesn’t contain homosalate so we consider this one okay.

Supergoop! sunscreen contain chemical sun-blocking agents in most formulas. Their 100% mineral sunscreens are, to be fair, very similar to our list of Good and Best sunscreens. However, we’d prefer you support those brands that are not polluting the environment with any of their products!

You know I love TJ’s, but Trader Joe’s spray sunscreen is total Sneaky Stuff. It contains 15% homosalate, one of the worst chemical sunscreen ingredients.
