Sunscreen

For more than 15 years, we've researched sunscreen ingredients and evaluated the brands we trust most. Every sunscreen below has been carefully vetted to help you find a clean, mineral sunscreen made without many of the ingredients we recommend avoiding—making it easy to protect your skin with confidence.

How We Think About Non-Toxic Sunscreen

We believe healthy sun exposure has benefits, but when sunscreen is needed, we recommend choosing a clean mineral sunscreen made with safer ingredients. Every sunscreen on this page has been selected because it provides effective UV protection while meeting our standards for ingredient safety, performance, and transparency.

Why We Recommend Mineral Sunscreens

We generally recommend mineral sunscreens made with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide instead of formulas that rely on many of the chemical UV filters we choose to avoid. Mineral sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection while remaining our preferred choice for everyday use.

There's No One "Best" Sunscreen

The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear. Some formulas are ideal for babies and kids, others are lightweight enough for everyday facial use, and some offer the best value for protecting the whole family. We recommend choosing the sunscreen that best fits your lifestyle and skin type.

How We Choose Sunscreen

Every recommendation is based on more than 15 years of researching sunscreen ingredients, evaluating brand transparency, and testing products in real life. We recommend only the sunscreens we'd confidently use on ourselves and our own families.

  • We consider a sunscreen "clean" when it's made with safer ingredients, transparent manufacturing practices, and effective mineral UV protection. We generally recommend mineral sunscreens made with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide and avoid many of the chemical UV filters commonly found in conventional sunscreens.

  • We generally recommend avoiding sunscreens that rely on chemical UV filters like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene whenever possible. Instead, we prefer mineral sunscreens made with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide because they provide broad-spectrum UV protection using ingredients we feel more comfortable recommending.

  • We generally recommend mineral sunscreens because they use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to provide broad-spectrum UV protection without relying on many of the chemical UV filters we choose to avoid. Zinc oxide is our preferred active ingredient because it offers excellent UVA and UVB protection while remaining gentle for most skin types.

  • Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to protect your skin from UV rays, while chemical sunscreens rely on synthetic UV filters to absorb UV radiation. We generally recommend mineral sunscreens because of their ingredient profile and excellent broad-spectrum protection.
