Non-toxic body care products including lotions, soap bars, and natural deodorant bottles on a table with plants.

Body Care

Most conventional body care products contain synthetic fragrances, parabens, and phthalates that absorb directly through your skin. Everything here is made with clean, effective ingredients — so your daily routine works without the toxic trade-offs.

What to Avoid in Body Care Products

1. Synthetic Fragrance

“Fragrance” or “perfume” on an ingredient label is a legal loophole that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are endocrine disruptors or allergens. It appears in everything from body wash to lotion to deodorant. Look for products scented only with essential oils or labeled “fragrance-free.”

2. Parabens & Phthalates

Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.) are preservatives linked to hormone disruption. Phthalates are plasticizers often hidden under “fragrance” that have been associated with reproductive harm. Both absorb readily through skin — especially concerning with products used daily.

3. Aluminum Compounds

Conventional antiperspirants use aluminum salts to block sweat glands. Aluminum is a heavy metal with links to health concerns when absorbed through skin, particularly near lymph nodes. We carry only aluminum-free deodorants that work with your body’s natural processes.

How We Vet

We avoid synthetic fragrances (a catch-all for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals), parabens, phthalates, aluminum compounds, PEGs, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. We look for transparent ingredient lists, minimal processing, and third-party testing where available.

Body Care FAQs

  • The biggest ones to avoid are synthetic fragrance (hides hundreds of undisclosed chemicals), parabens (hormone-disrupting preservatives), phthalates (often hidden under “fragrance”), aluminum compounds (in antiperspirants), PEGs (penetration enhancers that can carry contaminants into skin), and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin. Every product in this collection is free from all of these.

  • No — and this distinction matters. “Fragrance-free” means no fragrance ingredients were added. “Unscented” often means masking fragrances were used to neutralize odor, which still exposes you to synthetic chemicals. If you’re avoiding fragrance for health or sensitivity reasons, always look for “fragrance-free” rather than “unscented.”

  • Yes — when formulated well. The products we carry are chosen specifically because they perform, not just because they’re clean. We’ve tested and vetted each one for real-world effectiveness. That said, some natural deodorants have a short adjustment period as your body recalibrates after years of aluminum-based antiperspirants — this is normal and typically resolves within a few weeks.

  • Conventional antiperspirants use aluminum salts to physically block sweat glands. Aluminum is a heavy metal that can be absorbed through skin, particularly in the underarm area near lymph nodes. Aluminum-free deodorants work differently — they neutralize odor-causing bacteria without blocking your body’s natural sweating process, which is an important detox function.

  • There’s no regulated definition of “non-toxic” in the personal care industry, which is why we do the vetting ourselves. To us, non-toxic means free from ingredients linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, or bioaccumulation — including synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, aluminum, PEGs, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. We also consider packaging safety and manufacturing transparency.

  • Pregnancy is one of the most important times to switch to non-toxic body care. Many conventional products contain phthalates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances that are endocrine disruptors — meaning they can interfere with hormones at a time when hormonal balance is critical for fetal development. Skin absorption increases during pregnancy, making ingredient quality even more important. We recommend switching to clean, fragrance-free formulas across your entire routine.
