We use "non-toxic" to mean products that are free from ingredients and materials that have been linked to harm — whether through off-gassing, skin absorption, inhalation, or environmental impact. This includes synthetic fragrance, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, parabens, phthalates, halogenated flame retardants, heavy metals, and high-VOC finishes and adhesives. We don't use the term loosely — every product in our store has been reviewed against our internal standards, which are informed by peer-reviewed research, regulatory guidance, and input from scientists and health professionals.

We consider third-party certifications as meaningful verification, though not a requirement for every product. The certifications we find most rigorous are GREENGUARD Gold (low chemical emissions in furniture and building materials), GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard, for textiles), OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 (tested for harmful substances in textiles), NSF/ANSI 61 (for water contact materials), and EWG Verified (for personal care and cleaning products). We also look at USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and B Corp status where relevant. A product without certification can still meet our standards — and a certified product still gets reviewed on its own merits.

Off-gassing is the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from materials like furniture, flooring, paint, mattresses, and cleaning products. VOCs evaporate at room temperature and accumulate in indoor air — which the EPA estimates is often 2–5x more polluted than outdoor air. Common VOCs include formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and acetaldehyde, and chronic low-level exposure has been linked to respiratory issues, headaches, and endocrine disruption. Off-gassing is highest when products are new and decreases over time. You can reduce exposure by ventilating rooms when introducing new products, choosing low-VOC or VOC-free certified options, and using an air purifier with an activated carbon filter.

The most meaningful certifications for mattresses are GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard), which cover the entire supply chain from raw material to finished product. GREENGUARD Gold is also strong for chemical emissions. Be cautious of vague claims like "natural," "eco-friendly," or "CertiPUR-US" alone — CertiPUR-US certifies polyurethane foam meets basic emissions limits but does not mean the mattress is organic or free from all synthetic materials. The most genuinely low-toxicity mattresses use certified organic latex, wool (as a natural flame barrier), and organic cotton — and can document the source and certification of each component.

All cleaning products in our store are reviewed to be free from the ingredients of highest concern for children and pets: synthetic fragrance, chlorine bleach, ammonia, quats (quaternary ammonium compounds), optical brighteners, and endocrine-disrupting surfactants. That said, "safer" doesn't mean "harmless in all situations" — always store cleaning products out of reach of children and pets, ventilate during use, and follow product instructions. If you have a pet with specific sensitivities (especially birds, which are highly sensitive to airborne chemicals), check individual product pages or contact us for guidance.

We avoid synthetic fragrance (including parfum), parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea), methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT), PEGs and their derivatives, propylene glycol at high concentrations, sodium lauryl sulfate in products with prolonged skin contact, oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens, and undisclosed "fragrance" or "flavor" ingredients. Our standards are informed by EWG's Skin Deep database, peer-reviewed research, and guidance from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

Organic certification is meaningful for ingredients that carry pesticide residue risk — like cotton in clothing and bedding, and food-grade ingredients in baby care. GOTS-certified organic cotton verifies the entire textile supply chain is free from synthetic pesticides and prohibited processing chemicals. But "organic" on a label doesn't automatically mean a finished product is safe — a product can contain organic ingredients and still include synthetic fragrance, parabens, or other concerning additives. For baby products specifically, we prioritize fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulations from brands with full ingredient transparency, whether or not they carry an organic certification.
