We were pretty lucky in the diaper rash department, but if your baby is afflicted, you’ll want to find an organic diaper cream without chemicals (common culprits are parabens and BHA).
Do Cloth Diapers Prevent Diaper Rash?
My hunch is that cloth diapers are less likely to cause diaper rash than are disposables because cotton is more breathable than plastic, but I haven’t found studies to support this idea.
Note: If you are using cloth diapers, you’ll want to avoid any diaper rash cream that contains zinc, as it can build up in the diaper and render it less effective. I’ve indicated below which rash treatments have zinc.
My Pick for Best Organic Diaper Rash Cream
Green Goo Organic Miracle Baby Balm
I’ve compiled a long list of customer emails from thrilled parents who have tried Green Goo’s Baby Balm. It’s hard to find a natural, organic diaper cream that does the trick, but this one does. It also has the safest list of ingredients of any of the Good Stuff brands.

Coconut as Cure-All
I tend to think of coconut oil as a reasonable first-try cure for most ailments, and diaper rash is no exception. Try smearing a little on your baby’s bottom with a Q-tip.
If you want a rash treatment more tailored for tushies, Check out the Good Stuff below.

Bad Stuff
Dyprotex Ultra Medicated Diaper Rash Ointment Pads
Stay away from Dyprotex Ultra Medicated Diaper Rash Ointment Pads. Fragrance and propylparaben are a couple of good reasons to skip them, despite their effectiveness.
Palmer’s Diaper Rash Cream and Bottom Butter
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste
Boudreaux’s Butt Paste is made almost entirely of petroleum derivatives, including paraffin, petrolatum, and mineral oil.
Sneaky Stuff
Avalon Organics Diaper Balm
Avalon Organics makes a diaper balm that contains retinyl palmitate (linked with cancer and reproductive toxicity).
Weleda Diaper Cream
What a disappointment to those of us who forever trusted Weleda to learn that their Calendula Diaper Care contains a handful of toxic ingredients (like limonene and geraniol, along with lanolin), and is rated a 4 out of 10 (“moderately hazardous”) on Skin Deep.

I’ve been told countless times to use Bag Balm to help with diaper rash. Would this be any good as far as ingredient safety goes?
Marry
Wow. Great stuff of Organic Diaper Cream and you’ve really helped out and it is very good as there is just so much stuff to give away. Thanks!

Hi, what are your thoughts on 7th generation diaper cream?

Not sure if anyone mentioned but my favorite by far is Puremedy Diaper Rash Salve. It is incredible on regular and yeast diaper rash and wonderful ingredients.
Alex
Hi, is triple paste diaper cream okay to use? THANK YOU!

I came across Zum Products on the website www.indigowild.com. I got it as a baby gift and their Zum Baby line is awesome. I think the Salve for Baby’s Bottom has been an instant miracle at healing rashes. It is worth a look at for review. Ingredients appear to be straight forwards—maybe the only question would be all organic.

Thoughts on Peas in a Pod Smooth as a Baby’s Bum Balm?

Imagine this may be an old article as California Baby Diaper rash scores a 1 not a 2 currently on ewg so you may want to update so people don’t dismiss that product.
Karen
Have you been able to check on Baby Hugo Naturals Diaper Rash Cream yet? EWG only references an ‘old product’ and referencing the ingredients list on my container, they’re slightly different.
Thanks!Kelly T.
Ever heard of Booty Love by Thirsties? Here are the ingredients: Extra Virgin Olive Oil*, Beeswax*, Oregon Grape Root, Myrrh Gum, Yarrow Herb*, Calendula Flower* What are your thoughts?
Paulette
Hi! For baby powders, what do you think of the Burt’s bees one? The fragrance it contains is listed as natural, and it contains limonene. Is this okay?

I wan to know abt ABDderm products from bioderma.. r they fine?>

I bought BAbo botanicals diaper rash cream, it wasnt any helpful for rashes or prevention of rashes. I was resistant to use soducream but had no other option in hand as i had got it for free so i used it n it really works great n soothes the baby buns..my tube of this babo botanicals diaper cream is just sitting idle in the shelf!
I also dont really like the babo botanicals oatmeal lotion for babies. rather Weleda calendula is better. what abt shea moisture?
Ashley
This site is everything, thanks! We’ve used various products on your list/from the comments section to treat diaper rash. But now I’m pregnant with a 2nd child, and – IF we choose circumcision – I was wondering if any of these provide a strong enough barrier to protect the site afterwards. I know the hospital recommends piling on the A&D, but is there a safer option that has a petroleum-like feel in order to get that same effect?

It is the only thing that we’ve tried that works on his diaper rash.Jackie
I am wondering the same. The EWG has a very low score for it. I don’t see it updated above. So, I would just like to know why it is not at least in sneaky stuff!

Hi, Many thanks for all your feedback. Could you tell me which ingredients you don’t like of Mustela 123. My baby is 7 months old and I have been using it since she was born.
I’m really worried now that I read that from you.
Do you consider Honest diaper cream safer than Mustela?

What do you think about All Good Goop?
Thanks!
Ms. Milkweed
Oh, just saw this and it’s similar to my question, in the comments further down – on my tube of Babo, the ingredients list actually just says “fragrance” – not “natural fragrance” – I wonder if Babo would disclose what the fragrance is?
Ms. Milkweed
I loooove your site and refer to it regularly as a trusted resource on par with EWG. And I can’t believe the time it must take you to respond so thoroughly to all of these product questions in the comments. So thank you!
Here’s my question: I’m using Babo Botanicals Oatmilk Calendula Soothing Diaper Cream and it is miraculous. My LO had terrible diaper rash with broken skin and sores and my usual go-to, Earth Mama, along with copious coconut oil, wasn’t helping. The Babo cream is amazing. But I’m wondering why I can’t find an EWG link for that specific product so that I can get a sense of what some of the more complicated ingredients are, and also wondering about the fragrance. Somewhere I read that Babo’s fragrances are all naturally derived, but in the ingredients it’s just listed as “fragrance” and it’s a very strong smell that’s not recognizable to me. Do you know anything about Babo’s ingredients or specifically the fragrance? Thanks, you rock!Alejandra

Hi Kinga-
It says “natural fragrance,” which means you don’t need to worry:).

I recently bought the Babo calendula diaper rash cream and only now realized that one of the ingredients listed on the back is fragrance. Thoughts?

Hi! What would you recommend for chapped lips? Anything that has ingredients safe for ingestion?
Maia James
I’m not THAT worried about castor oil, and if the fragrance is natural it’s not a concern.
Morgan
Thanks for all of your input on this! It looks like Burts Bees Baby Multipurpose Ointment isn’t ranked as well on the EWG list because it contains castor oil and frangrance. The jar says the fragrance is “natural” so I’m not sure if that helps? Also do you know what the concerns are with castor oil? I’m seeing it in a lot of things as I’m searching for a new diaper cream. Thank you!

I would be okay with this one, but there is some controversy around emulsifying wax.

I am curious about Paladin diaper rash ointment. Is is safe and clean for use and infants. It works really well and I want to ensure that it is considered safe. I also used Drstin but after reading the post Im going to get rid of it.

Hi! I love this page and I’m on it every day! My wife and I just adopted a baby boy! He was 4weeks premature and is 3 weeks old now. He was born addicted to methadone so we are still in the hospital. Reading your guides and surfing your page has helped me tremendously!
Ingredients: Organic sunflower oil Beeswax Frankincense Red peony root Phellodendron amurense bark Dictamnus root barkMy grandmother just bought Emily diaper skin and soother plus and it seems to be working really well.

My sister just had my nephew about six months ago and she could never find any method that prevented or even treated his diaper rash. The cloth diapers didn’t make any difference either. It was a constant battle for her. It started as a little joke at first but I suggested that she try Anti-Monkey Butt Baby Powder as a preventative measure. I actually use the adult version for myself when I work out. But I kid you not it actually worked! So well that she started using the diaper rash cream as well in case a little rash did flare up. It contains calamine in the cream so it soothes his delicate skin. It’s definitely worth a look at!
Rae
What about Medline REMEDY with Olivamine – Calazime Skin Protectant Paste ?
Maia James
yes.
Maia James
Yes, the Good Stuff diaper creams are fine on his penis.
The two ingredients lists you pasted look fine to me. There are lots of essential oils in both of these, but if your son doesn’t react to them, should be okay.
Maia James
Yes, it’s Good Stuff:)
