UPDATED: 2018

When I first wrote this post on non-toxic shampoo, I also stopped using shampoo. I was closeted “no-pooer” for a while, and you can read about the no poo method here.

Despite the fact that my hair genuinely looks better when I’m not washing it (see the picture on the left), I can’t seem to stick with it and really miss a nice lather when I’m in the shower.

If you don’t want to skip the suds yourself, you might want to become familiar with the problematic ingredients in conventional—and many of the “natural”—shampoos on the market:

  • Surfactants. All soaps and detergents need a surfactant to be effective (surfactants basically facilitate water’s ability to do its dirt-removing job). Many surfactants found in conventional shampoos–such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), cocamidopropyl betaine, and cocamide DEA—come with environmental and human health concerns. Some natural shampoos use these questionable surfactants as well. Safer surfactants that you’ll find in non-toxic shampoos include decyl glucoside and laurel glucoside.
  • Preservatives. To extend shelf life, shampoos typically contain controversial preservatives, such as parabensbenzyl alcohol, methylisothiazolinone, and methylchloroisothiazonlinone. Click any of those hyperlinks to go to our glossary and read all the scary details about these chemicals, which you won’t find in a truly non-toxic shampoo.
  • Fragrance. When we were newlyweds, the lush, floral scent of Biolage lingered in our apartment for hours after my husband took his morning shower. Unfortunately, that strong smell is probably the result of phthalates, which usually hide in “fragrance” or “parfum” in a shampoo ingredients list, unless the label specifically says something like “scented with only essential oils” or “100% natural.” Phthaltes are known hormone disruptors and hard to avoid–but an easy way to slash your exposure is by avoiding scented personal care products. UPDATE: Daylon has found a non-toxic shampoo that he loves!
  • Retinyl Palmitate: Most shampoos on the market contain the probable carcinogen retinyl palmitate, which is a synthetic form of palm oil.
  • Sulfates. Many of our readers ask about sulfate-free shampoos. Most shampoos contain sulfates, which are types of surfactants (see above). A “sulfate-free” shampoo probably doesn’t contain any of the three most common sulfates: Sodium lauryl (SLS), sodium laureth (SLES), and ammonia laureth (ALS). Sulfates can be natural or synthetic, and aren’t necessarily bad in and of themselves. SLES is the most concerning sulfate in my opinion, as it is often contaminated with carcinogenic 1-4, dioxane. The same concern exists to a lesser degree about ALS. To make it simple, you can rest assured that all of the Good Stuff below are sulfate-free shampoos.

Good Stuff

The brands listed below represent some of the only non-toxic shampoo out there–they are free of phthalates, parabens, SLES/SLS, and toxic preservatives.

The truth is that my hair looks best using the no poo method, but when I’m too lazy to deal with that, I reach for one of these guys.

Acure Organics Non-Toxic Shampoo

Acure shampoos are available in our online store and cost $9.99 for a 8-ounce bottle. I have found that Acure provides the best lather of the natural bunch, and all of them smell delicious. I use the Moroccan Argan Oil & Stem Cell formula since my hair tends toward being dry.

Cost per ounce: $8.25

Ingredients: Water/eau, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Extract*, Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry) Fruit Extract*, Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Fruit Extract*, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Extract*, Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Flower Extract*, Matricaria Recutita (Chamomile) Flower Extract*, Aspalathus Linearis (Rooibos) Leaf Extract*, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Betaine, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Glycerin, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Potassium Sorbate, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil*, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol Acetate, Curcubita Pepo (Pumpkin) Seed Oil*, Natural Benzaldehyde, Cinnamomum Aromaticum (Cassia Bark) Oil, Ubiquinone (Coq10), Argania Spinosa Callus (Argan) Culture Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Extract. *organic Ingredient

Botanical Therapeutic Tree Essence Shampoo/Body Wash

This shampoo contains no ingredients of concern, and doubles as a body wash. In addition to saponified coconut for a nice lather, Botanical Therapeutics shampoo contains other natural ingredients like apple cider vinegar and extracts of nettle, clover, and olive fruit.

Cost per ounce: $1.68

Ingredients: Filtered Aqua, Potassium Cocoate (saponified Cocos nucifera / coconut oil), Potassium Palmate (Saponified Palm Oil), Glycerin (vegetable), Pinus banksiana (pine) extract, Magnesium Chloride (Magnesium Oil), Olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, Medicago sativa (alfalfa) leaf, Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile) flower extract, Echinacea purpurea (echinacea) flower extract, Urtica dioca (nettle) leaf extract, Trifolium pratense (clover) flower extract, Acetic Acid (Apple Cider Vinegar), Thuja plicata (red cedar) extract.

Beautycounter Daily Non-Toxic Shampoo

I love the way Beautycounter’s shampoo smells, and it’s solid in the performance department, too. The only ingredient of concern is the sodium benzoate; it’s a food grade preservative that I don’t like in products that I use for my kids, but which I’m okay with in stuff for myself. Beautycounter shampoo has a long ingredients list, and a lot of it is not natural. That said, Beautycounter tests all their products for purity after production, and carefully researches every single thing that goes into their line.

Cost per ounce: $3.12

Ingredients: Grapefruit : Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Sodium Cocoyl Methyl Isethionate, Glycerin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Panthenol, Coconut Acid, Decyl Glucoside, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Sodium Isethionate, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Ximenia Americana Seed Oil, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Limonene+,

Bad Stuff

It’s interesting that the expensive brands that you might only find in a salon seem to be among the most toxic shampoos on the market.

A bottle of Frederic Fekkai shampoo, for which I religiously shelled out $30 for years (including during the beginning of my pregnancy—yikes!), contains all the usual suspects: parabensretinyl palmitate, and fragrance (the smell was, in fact, what hooked me). It also has a couple of those nefarious preservatives I mentioned before–methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone.

Bumble and Bumblec. BoothPhytoFresh, and Nexxus all make shampoos that garner a whopping 9 or 10 on Skin Deep’s toxicity scale.

The lower-end brands (PanteneGarnier FructisSuave) tend to get scores of between 5 and 7 from Skin Deep, containing fragrance, methylisothiazolinone, and methylchloroisothiazolinone, among other chemicals.

Sneaky Stuff

Alterna Hemp with Organics Repair Shampoo sounds, well, alternative, but considering it contains parabensfragranceretinyl palmitatemethylisothiazolinone, and methylchloroisothiazolinone, I’d say it’s pretty mainstream. It gets a 9 from Skin Deep, and the rest of Alterna’s hair products score at least a 6.

Aubrey Organics shampoo only contains one bad ingredient, retinol, but Skin Deep gives this synethtic form of vitamin A a whopping 9 out of 10 on its toxicity scale.

Avalon Organics line of shampoos contain benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate. These aren’t the worst ingredients—so I would call Avalon Okay Stuff to use in a pinch…but not Good Stuff.

Aveeno Active Naturals shampoo is another case of greenwashing, since almost none of the ingredients is natural. Phenoxyethanol and cocamidopropyl betaine make an appearance on this label, but worse is the synthetic fragrance, rated a 9 out of 10 on Skin Deep.

Desert Essence shampoos contain a handful of ingredients that EWG considers moderately concerning–including phenoxyethanol and cocamidopropyl betaine.

Giovvani‘s line of haircare always looks weird to me in Whole Foods–its packaging is much more cheesy salon brand than natural brand, but the ingredients aren’t terrible. Still, none of it is organic, and it’s again got phenoxyethanol and cocamidopropyl betaine, so I still consider it Sneaky Stuff.

Jason Natural Tea Tree Scalp Normalizing Shampoo contains fragrance, retinyl palmitate, cocamidoproply betaine, and benzyl alcohol. It also packs in four more ingredients that Skin Deep considers moderately hazardous: benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, lyral, and hydroxycitronellal. The rest of Jason shampoos are only slightly better, and not any safer than your average drug store brand.

Kiss My Face shampoo isn’t terrible, but it does contain cocamidoproply betaine.

Nature’s Gate Organics Organic Herbal Blends Soothing Shampoo, Tea Tree & Blue Cypress gets a 9 on Skin Deep, thanks to parabens, fragrance, PEG-150 distearate (which earns a 6 from Skin Deep), cocamidopropyl betaine, and diazolidinyl urea. The rest of Nature’s Gate shampoos score a 6 or the occasional 7 on Skin Deep.

BTW…I tried Free N Clear Shampoo…it is …well…free and clear. Hard to find a shampoo that does not have cocamidoproply betaine and this one does not along with free of other things we hate. I am very careful what I put on my hair/scalp since I had seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp. It was a mild case but it woke me up to all the stuff in shampoos and hair dyes. (I use Naturtint Hair Color….has less chemicals than most)

I am partial to the ‘no poo’ method, only shampoo-ing once or twice per week. My questions are these:
    1) what are good shampoos without any plastics, that are totally eco everything, and biodegradable?
    2) there is no mention here on the website about healthy, eco friendly, good conditioners. Are there any that are also plastic-free, and biodegradable?

    Thanks!

Hi Jennifer, Great questions. I am also partial to a no poo method. At first I only shampooed weekly but now I don’t use any at all and it seems to work for me, just warm water. We would love to find some shampoos that are free of plastic. Most shampoos and conditioners come in plastic bottles unfortunately.

What a great read – I don’t know how you make time to respond to so many questions and comments. Just wanted to say that, based on what I read in the article as well as the comments thread, I just ordered a buuuuunch of ACURE products. Looking forward to trying them. I’ve used Monat for the last two years and it did regrow some of the hair I lost after having my third baby. However, I’m noticing that it’s breaking off like crazy. It’s become dry and fragile. Never a problem I’ve had before. It’s super expensive and I’m bummed to throw out the collection of products I’ve built up, but I really don’t feel good about using the stuff any more! Again, thanks for your research and recommendations.

Greetings Maia, I’m a newbie! Love the site so far, all the comments and the product resources! Question? RE: A toxic free Shampoo and Conditioner which contains Biotin (and any other ingredient that may help with 63 yr young male hair thinning, etc, etc!) This is how I discovered your site while researching very long hours on the topic. Then, I looked at the ingredients of my Shampoo 🙁 (Matrix: Biolage) not good! But, I wondered why I didn’t see “BIOTIN” (or other things that claim to help with hair growth, etc.) in any of the great brands you’ve rec’md or featured on your site? “HELP!!” HaHa! Thx, and looking fwd to all the great resources on you site! TY! Paul

Hi everyone. I’m a 60 year old mom of 3 and grandmother of 5. I have been recently diagnosed with contact dermatitis mainly allergic to formaldehyde and methylchoroisothaizolinone. I am desperately seeking shampoos, conditioners, liquid soaps, cosmetics, and household products (clothing detergent, dryer sheets, etc) that I can use without these 2 preservatives. It’s very difficult as i am so unfamiliar with this process and am having difficulty locating them on line. Can anyone help? So much to learn and so hard to deal with the pain of the dermatitis as it is on my hands. Luckily my husband does most of the cleaning and dishes but love to cook and entertain but has taken all the pleasure out of it. Wearing gloves doesn’t really help much. I appreciate anyone’s advice!!!!

Hi! A question about John Masters shampoo (rosemary and lavender)… I see on EWG that it contains 3 questionable ingredients, including: sodium benzoate. When I clicked on the link on your page, this is the formula it linked to on Amazon.

    What do you think?

    1. Rod Hall Avatar
      Rod Hall

You are eating sodium benzoate as a preservative in many packaged foods – probably not nearly as big a concern putting it on your hair and washing it off. As the article noted “food grade”, so that is why it is on the “good” list.

Hi Maia, Can you kindly help me with my issue below?

Problem – I’m a 28 year old guy currently using the head and shoulders hydrating shampoo for my hair but my scalp is very itchy and I’m getting small boils on my scalp. I also have a dry hair/dandruff /dry scalp/hair fall/hair thinning issue. If I skip washing my hair for a week I start getting dandruff/excess hair fall/hair thinning.

    Questions –
1] Which hair products I should use to keep my hair healthy and those that promote hair growth/volume/stop thinning..for shampoo/conditioner as well as any other hair products for days between shampooing. I shampoo twice a week as of now and want to go for chemical free/vegan hair products.

2] Which brand does your husband use?

I personally have dealt with dry scalp for many years. I have used everything on this planet. The only 2 shampoo’s which worked for me completely are mane and tail and loreal ever sleek. Over the years I have researched the toxins in 90 percent of our soaps, shampoo, etc and it’s no wonder people get ill. So sad. Recently developed rashes, hives, allergies to some of these, so I am derermined to finding the safest products that will work for me. Sometimes, I find a product better than all the others I have tried, but I have an allergy to a natural ingredient, like coconut oil, etc. with some of my allergies, like nickel.

I have used LOMA haircare products off and on for the last three years after being introduced to them by my longtime hair stylist—ten years. I have also used Inner Sense hair products prior to LOMA and still supplement with Inner Sense Leave-In Conditioner largely because Inner Sense does not contain any silicones, although the Inner Sense Shampoos are too irritating for my scalp and the LOMA Nourishing Shampoo is hands down the mildest and least irritating to my scalp of any shampoo I have used in the last 15 years. LOMA also makes a DEEP CONDITIONER which is silicone free and can be used as a cleanser on extremely dry scalp/hair. I know LOMA has a few questionable preservatives along with the silicone in the shampoos but the pure essential oils are very mild and effective and anti-inflammatory to sensitive scalps. The whole line is color safe too. Worth a try and probably one of the absolute best of the salon brands out there. A very ethical company as well. 🙂

I love Monat haircare products they are salon quality but nontoxic they have a great list of no’s. After being diagnosed with breast cancer I tried everything! But my hair was feeling gross I finally found Monat which also had 3rd party clinical studies proving regrowth and follicle strength which I really needed, my hair honestly had never felt so healthy and thick too! This is the second positive review I’ve seen on one page for this product and no replies to it. I also noticed that your contact info (just as the other reviewer) has the product name in it. Are you a representative of this product? Are you being paid for these reviews? Is so, think this is such a sneaky way to drum up sales!! Very dishonest in my opinion!

Hi Peggy, I cannot answer as to why the 2 previous posters didn’t respond. I can assure you that Independent Market Partners do not get paid for reviews. I’m sure they fell in love with their results, value non-toxic ingredients and became distributors like I did. Our company training does not promote spreading your website link profusely as it DOES perpetuate skepticism for all direct sales and causes mistrust. Please reach out if you still have any questions or concerns regarding the company or products: I’m happy to help.

Hi Maia. I just started using the Acure clarifying shampoo which I love, but I noticed it contains Rosemary essential oil which I’ve read is not safe for young children. Do you feel that oils in commercial beauty products or cleaning products are concerning?

Also I saw that Acure makes a 4-1 foamer for babies in a citrus scent but it lists “natural fragrance” on the label. What does this mean?

    Thank you!!!

    1. Maia James Avatar
      Maia James

I personally don’t worry about the tiny amounts of these essential oils in otherwise Good Stuff products, but of course it’s a personal call. You can always go with unscented products if you want to avoid it all together. As for “natural fragrance,” that just means it’s essential-oil based rather than synthetic.

Hey there! Thanks for the shampoo recommendation! I agree about the sulfate part not being necessarily bad, but I try to avoid them because they make my hair really dry. It’s what makes the shampoo sud, but it strips away my hair’s natural oil. Have you heard about soapberry products? Tree to Tub, the website, sell them. I will say I did experience detox after a week or so – as my scalp was getting rid of all the junk built up. After that, I still can’t believe how much my hair has grown or how soft it is now. And not frizzy! That was the real issue. It really is an amazing line. But I will caution you that you need to speak with someone who can customize it for you. It’s not one-size fits all. Hi!

Do you have an opinion on the wen hair loss scandal? I am interested in trying a new product called “new wash” by “hairstory” but am nervous. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Rachel Avatar
      Rachel

I used New Wash and loved it – effective in hard water, no itchy scalp, one and done, etc. The only caveat I have for that product is that if you have fine, low porosity hair then build-up is likely to be an issue (as it was for me) due to the use of Behentrimonium Methosulfate – which is a cationic conditioning agent (i.e. a quaternay ammonium salt, a “quat” basically… cationic surfactants are conditioning agents that bond to hair, due to their positive charge).

Cationic surfactants are exceedingly difficult to remove, and standard sulfate shampoos (SLS, etc.) won’t do it… only C12-14/14-16 Olefin Sulfonate and Sodium Polystyrene Sulfonate will remove them effectively (e.g. Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo and a few other brands)… while these aren’t sulfates, they can be every bit as harsh and irritating, especially for sensitive scalps.

Those with thick, coarse, dry, high porosity (often wavy/curly) hair tend to love and do well with cationic surfactants – as they excel at anti-static and frizz control – which is why these ingredients and their variations are now so prevalent in nearly everything.

Cationic surfactants and quats give me instant buildup, and quats in particular cause hairline/scalp breakouts for me. I’ve had to become a diligent label reader and ingredients sleuth in order to find products that meet my standards for safety and efficacy without the inclusions of these ingredients.

I loved everything else about New Wash so much that I’ve been sorely tempted to try the new “Deep” formula – designed to be more cleansing and less conditioning for finer, oilier hair types… but alas: while it has moved significantly further down the ingredients list, the product still had BHMS in it, and will thus result in near-instant build up for me.

So… just something to be aware of… if build up is not generally an issue for you, you might love it!
