How to Choose a Non-Toxic Body Wash or Soap

The body wash aisle is full of clean, natural, and gentle claims that mean nothing legally. Here’s what to actually look at:

Synthetic Fragrance

Fragrance or parfum on a body wash label can represent a blend of hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, including known allergens, phthalates, and hormone disruptors. It’s the single most important ingredient to avoid. The only trustworthy options are fragrance-free or products scented exclusively with disclosed essential oils at safe concentrations.

Sulfates (SLS & SLES)

Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are the surfactants responsible for lather in most conventional body washes. SLS is a known skin irritant that can disrupt the skin barrier with repeated use — particularly problematic for eczema-prone or sensitive skin. SLES can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen. Sulfate-free body washes use gentler surfactants like coco-glucoside and decyl glucoside and are a meaningfully better choice for daily use.

Bar Soap vs. Body Wash

Bar soaps are often the simpler and cleaner choice — they typically require fewer preservatives than liquid formulas and are lower-waste by nature. Traditional cold-process soaps made with plant oils are among the cleanest options available. The tradeoff is that bar soaps have a higher pH, which can be drying for very dry or eczema-prone skin — in those cases, a sulfate-free, glycerin-rich liquid wash may be more appropriate.

Safe for the Whole Family

If choosing one body wash for the whole household including kids, fragrance-free and sulfate-free are the non-negotiables. Children’s skin is more permeable and more sensitive than adult skin, and their developing endocrine systems are more vulnerable to hormone-disrupting ingredients. For babies, even mainstream baby washes often contain fragrance and MIT — check the full ingredient list, not the front of the bottle.

  • A truly non-toxic body wash is free from the ingredients most linked to harm in rinse-off products: synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulfates (SLS/SLES), phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin and quaternium-15, and methylisothiazolinone (MIT). These aren’t obscure concerns — synthetic fragrance is the leading cause of contact dermatitis from personal care products, MIT is a potent allergen and sensitizer, and parabens are endocrine disruptors detected in human tissue. A non-toxic body wash uses gentle, well-studied surfactants like coco-glucoside or sodium cocoyl isethionate for lather, and preserves with safer alternatives like phenoxyethanol or sodium benzoate at appropriate concentrations. Every body wash in our collection has been screened against these criteria.

  • For most people, yes — especially for daily use. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an effective cleanser but a known skin irritant that strips the skin barrier with repeated exposure, which can worsen dryness, sensitivity, and eczema. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is milder but can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen, as a byproduct of manufacturing. Sulfate-free body washes use gentler surfactants derived from coconut or sugar — like coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, and sodium cocoyl isethionate — that clean effectively without the same irritation risk. The tradeoff is usually less lather, since sulfates are what produce the thick foam most people associate with "clean." If you’re managing sensitive, dry, or eczema-prone skin, switching to sulfate-free is one of the highest-impact changes you can make to your shower routine.

  • From a formulation standpoint, bar soap is often the simpler and lower-toxicity option. Because bar soaps contain little to no water, they need far fewer preservatives than liquid body washes — eliminating a whole category of potentially problematic ingredients. Traditional cold-process soaps made with plant oils (olive, coconut, shea, castor) and lye are among the most minimal and clean cleansing products available. The lye (sodium hydroxide) fully reacts during saponification and is not present in the finished soap. The main limitations of bar soap: higher pH (around 9–10) compared to skin’s natural pH (~4.5–5.5), which can disrupt the skin barrier and cause dryness with regular use — especially for people with eczema or very dry skin. In those cases, a syndets bar (synthetic detergent bar with skin-neutral pH) or a sulfate-free liquid wash may be better tolerated.

  • For eczema-prone skin, the non-negotiables are fragrance-free (not just unscented), sulfate-free, and MIT/CMIT-free. These three ingredient categories are the most common triggers for eczema flares from body wash. Beyond avoiding those, look for a body wash with a skin-compatible pH (around 5–6) and soothing ingredients like colloidal oatmeal (an FDA-approved skin protectant), glycerin, or ceramides to support the skin barrier. Avoid any product with essential oils at high concentrations — even "natural" botanicals like lavender, tea tree, and peppermint are common sensitizers for compromised skin. Short ingredient lists are generally safer for reactive skin than complex formulas. Apply moisturizer immediately after showering while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration — the body wash choice matters, but this step matters just as much.

  • Baby skin is significantly more permeable than adult skin, which means ingredients absorb more readily and the potential for harm from problematic ingredients is higher. Despite this, many mainstream baby washes — including popular "tear-free" formulas — contain synthetic fragrance, MIT, and parabens. The safest baby body wash is fragrance-free (not just "lightly scented"), MIT/CMIT-free, paraben-free, and sulfate-free. Short ingredient lists from brands with full transparency are the most trustworthy. For newborns and young infants, plain water or a minimal single-ingredient wash is often sufficient — babies don’t need much cleansing beyond diaper area and neck folds.   • None of these terms have legal definitions in personal care, which means any brand can use them freely regardless of what’s actually in the product. "Natural" is the most abused — a body wash can be labeled natural and still contain synthetic fragrance, MIT, and PEGs. "Clean" is slightly more meaningful when used by retailers with published standards (like ours), but meaningless as a brand self-claim. "Organic" has a legal definition for food (USDA), but in personal care it only applies to specific certified ingredients — a product can say "with organic aloe" while being mostly synthetic. USDA Certified Organic and COSMOS Organic are the most rigorous organic certifications for personal care. EWG Verified is the most useful safety-focused certification — it requires full ingredient disclosure and excludes chemicals of concern regardless of whether ingredients are natural or synthetic. Bottom line: ignore front-of-bottle claims and read the ingredient list, or shop from a curated source that has done that screening for you.
