The Best Materials for Hot Beverages

Food-grade stainless steel (18/8 or 18/10) is the most practical and durable option for travel mugs and thermoses. Borosilicate glass is the cleanest option for home mugs — completely inert and flavor-neutral, though less suitable for travel due to fragility. Food-grade silicone is safe for lids and seals. The BPA-Free Problem

"BPA-free" has become a marketing term that means very little in isolation. When manufacturers remove BPA from plastic, they typically replace it with structurally similar bisphenols — BPS, BPF, BPAF — that have similar or worse endocrine-disrupting profiles. A BPA-free plastic travel mug is not necessarily a safe travel mug. The only reliable way to avoid bisphenol exposure from drinkware is to avoid plastic contact with hot beverages entirely. For children’s cups and everyday family use, the same material hierarchy applies — stainless steel and glass over plastic, always.
