Two young children sitting in a bathtub with bubbles, one smiling at the camera.

When I was pregnant with Felix one million years ago, baby wash was one of the first rabbit holes I fell down. That first bath felt like such a milestone, and I wanted only the safest, purest products on his skin.

I wrote this guide to help you avoid going down the same rabbit hole. Below you’ll find my picks for the best natural baby soap and non-toxic baby wash, plus a (long) list of brands I recommend steering clear of.

A quick note: most non-toxic baby washes can double as shampoo. Many brands even combine shampoo and body wash for babies into one product. We do have a separate guide on Baby Shampoo, but the reality is that these products are interchangeable.

Ingredients to Avoid in Baby Wash

When shopping for a non-toxic baby wash, here are the big red flags:

  • Fragrance or parfum – can hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals, including phthalates.
  • Parabens (anything ending in “-paraben”) – synthetic preservatives linked to hormone disruption.
  • PEG chemicals (like PEG-40) – often contaminated with carcinogens.

Adult body washes often rely on harsher petroleum-based detergents, but baby wash is usually gentler. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s automatically safe.

What to Look for in the Best Natural Baby Soap

Now that you know what to avoid, here are ingredients I love to see in a non-toxic baby wash or organic baby soap:

  • Castile soap – traditionally made from saponified olive oil.
  • Saponified oils of coconut, olive, or sunflower.
  • Decyl glucoside – a mild, sulfate-free surfactant derived from sugar.
  • Organic glycerin – helps skin stay soft and moisturized.
  • Minimal or no essential oils – while natural, essential oils can irritate baby skin. Unscented is usually safest for newborns.
  • Packaged in glass, aluminum, or refillable/recyclable containers—better for your baby and the planet

How We Chose the Best Non-Toxic Baby Wash Brands

Because these products are used often and all over the body, I hold them to the highest standard. That’s why our Best Stuff list is limited to just a few brands—the cleanest of the clean.

What Makes a Baby Wash Best Stuff

  • 100% plant-based AND certified organic ingredients
  • No fragrance or parfum (including “natural” fragrance)
  • No parabens, PEGs, phenoxyethanol, or other synthetic preservatives
  • No SLS or SLES
  • No cocamidopropyl betaine or benzyl alcohol
  • Uses safe, gentle surfactants like castile soap, saponified oils, or decyl glucoside
  • Unscented or only minimally scented with low-risk essential oils (or none at all for newborns)

What Makes a Baby Wash Good Stuff

  • Mostly plant-based or organic ingredients, but not necessarily entirely organic
  • Free of the biggest red-flag ingredients (parabens, PEGs, SLS/SLES, cocamidopropyl betaine, benzyl alcohol)
  • May contain a mild preservative like sodium benzoate or phenoxyethanol, which are generally considered safe but not our first choice for babies
  • Light natural fragrance or essential oils may be used, though not ideal for very sensitive skin

What Makes a Baby Wash Okay Stuff

  • Free of the biggest offenders (parabens, PEGs, SLS/SLES, cocamidopropyl betaine, benzyl alcohol)
  • May contain sodium benzoate or phenoxyethanol as preservatives—both considered low-risk but not ideal for daily baby use

  • May use light natural fragrance or essential oils, which can sometimes irritate sensitive skin

What Makes a Baby Wash Sneaky Stuff

  • Marketed as “natural” or “gentle” but still includes concerning ingredients
  • Contains cocamidopropyl betaine or benzyl alcohol (moderate-to-high hazard scores on EWG due to irritation/allergy potential)
  • May include SLES (sodium laureth sulfate), which can be contaminated with carcinogenic 1,4-dioxane
  • Uses catch-all terms like “fragrance” or “parfum”, which can mask dozens of undisclosed chemicals

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate: Okay for Dishes, Not for Babies

One foaming agent you’ll see debated a lot is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). While not carcinogenic, it’s a harsh surfactant that can irritate skin. I’m fine with SLS in dish soap or laundry detergent, but I don’t want it on my kids’ skin.

Even trickier is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). It’s sometimes found in baby wash—even organic ones—and should always be avoided because it can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen.

The Bottom Line on Non-Toxic Baby Wash

Choosing a natural baby soap feels like it should be an easy task, but nothing can be simple in parenting, amiright? Below, I share the brands that truly meet my Best Stuff standard—but also please keep in mind that less is more when it comes to all baby skincare. Often, plain warm water is all you need, or you can use a simple bar soap for a planet-friendly way to wash your baby.

Now let's get into it!

Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Pure Castile Liquid Soap

  • This very basic soap contains only a few organic ingredients
  • One of them is potassium hydroxide, which some readers have been concerned about (it gets a 3 from Skin Deep). Otherwise known as lye, potassium hydroxide is a caustic agent used to turn the coconut oil in Bronner’s soap into, well, soap.
  • Fortunately, none remains in the finished product, and therefore, I consider this Good Stuff.

Cost per ounce: $0.52

Bad Stuff

Aquaphor Baby Wash & Shampoo does use decyl glucoside, which we like. Unfortunately, it's also got sodium myreth sulfate, which is sometimes contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, as well as PEG compounds and cocamidopropyl betaine.

Cetaphil Baby Wash & Shampoo, despite being called "gentle," contains basically everything we want you to avoid: SLES, PEGs, cocamidopropyl betaine, fragrance, phenoxyethanol, and sodium benzoate.

Jergen's Baby Wash contains synthetic fragrance and cocamidopopyl betaine--plus other lesser Bad Stuff (sodium benzoate, etc.).

Johnson’s has gotten rid of the phthalates and parabens in their babie washes, but they still include synthetic fragrance, cocamidopropyl betaine, PEG chemicals, and/or artificial coloring.

Sneaky Stuff

Aveeno Baby Calming Comfort Bath is marketed as “gentle” with oat, but contains synthetic fragrance, cocamidopropyl betaine, and sodium benzoate.

Babo Botanicals - We never thought this day would come, as we recommended and sold Babo for YEARS, but they've changed their formula to now contain cocamidopropyl betaine and synthetic fragrance in almost all of their baby and kid washes. Their ingredients would be Okay in adult formulas, but there are simply better, safer options for washing your baby. There are two exceptions to this Sneaky Stuff designation: the bar soap (Best Stuff) and the foaming newborn wash (good stuff).

BabyGanics Baby Shampoo & Wash is not the worst brand out there, and the fragrance-free is Okay Stuff, but they still use undisclosed fragrances, so I have to call this brand Sneaky.

Burt’s Bee’s Baby Shampoo & Wash is super close to being Okay Stuff, but like other Sneaky Brands here it has undisclosed fragrance ingredients.

Dove Baby Nightime Wash contains zero actual lavender, instead being scented with a synthetic fragrance. It also contains sodium benzoate and cocamidopropyl betaine. All this despite a stamp on the label that says "100% Skin-Natural Nutrients" (what does that even MEAN?).

Everyone 3-in-1 Kids Soap I generally like this brand, and wanted to be able to call this brand Good Stuff or at least Okay Stuff. Unfortunately, the inclusion of phenoxyethanol and benzyl alcohol make this Sneaky Stuff.

Hello Bello lost their EWG-verification, so I am not sure what's up with that, but the inclusion of cocamidopropyl betaine makes this one Sneaky Stuff.

Little Twig Baby Wash contains cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium benzoate.

Mustela has cleaned up their act a lot over the last decade, but all of their various baby washes contain cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium benzoate.

Noodle & Boo is a Sneaky brand with various baby and newborn washes that contain synthetic fragrance, and other questionable ingredients.

Original Sprout contains cocamidopropyl betaine and synthetic fragrance.

Puracy has cleaned up their ingredients somewhat, but this is still not something I would use on a baby (it contains synthetic fragrance, for one thing!).

Shea Moisture Baby Wash & Shampoo contains cocamidopropyl betaine–but they did get rid of the synthetic fragrance!

The Unscented Company Foaming Baby Wash contains cocamidopropyl betaine

Tubby Todd used to claim they were 100% natural, which was a total lie. They’ve changed the language on the front of the bottle, but still use cocamidopropyl betaine.

As always , love reading gimmethegoodstuff.com, the the only website I could go and trust, thank you for your great info!

I’m currently looking for wash since I need to buy more and also have baby coming in the next few weeks. I was looking into these two as well as MADE OF , what are your thoughts on those. thanks! Attitude 2-in-1 Natural Hair and Body Foaming Wash Baby, Fragrance Free Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Fragrance Free Shampoo and Wash (and they have the foaming option too)

Maia,

Do you have a recommendation for baby eczema wash?

Micki

My son had a reaction to the Weleda. I didn’t even bother to read the ingredients and then I saw that it is made with almond oil and sesame oil, both of which my son is allergic to. Besides that though, it has carrageenan as a top 10 ingredient, which i know is linked to cancer. I can’t believe that they would put that in a baby product!

Hi, I skimmed through the blog and found that some baby care companies use toxins and chemicals, but there are Babo Botanicals, Bella b which makes 100% natural and organic products. A lot of products are even EWG and Made Safe certified which ensures they are safe to use for kids and even their mama.

Erinn

You haven’t actually addressed Tubby Todd’s ingredients. You’ve said they’re full of it with their 100% natural claims. That’s cool but is it actually safe to use on our babies? Is the synthetic ingredients they have at least okay to use? They seem pretty great to me. Would like to have a more in depth opinion from you. Thanks!

Kelly

Hello! Thanks to you I found a love the Babo line. I ordered quite a bit a while back and honestly didn’t even look at the ingredients because I thought the whole line was “good stuff.” Then after reading on your guide that they added sodium benzoate I checked our Babo products to see if they contained it. They did not, but two products contained “natural fragrance.” What is your thought on this? I know I read once on your site only to trust fragrance that says it 100% essential oils. Thanks!

Paula

Hi! Would love to hear your thoughts on the Puracy products.
Thanks for the comprehensive posting!

Evonne

Sorry I meant Babo Botanicals, Sensitive Baby, Daily Hydra Lotion, Fragrance Free and not the Babo Botanicals, Sensitive Skin, Hydra Therapy Lotion, Fragrance Free for adults.

Evonne

One of your top picks is the Babo Botanicals, 3 in 1: Shampoo, Bubble Bath & Wash, Lavender Meadowsweet. What about the Babo Botanicals, Sensitive Baby, Shampoo & Wash, Fragrance Free? Im deciding between the two.
Also what are your thoughts on Babo Botanicals, Sensitive Skin, Hydra Therapy Lotion, Fragrance Free?

Thanks for maintaining such a useful site! I recently read about potential endocrine disruption effects of essential oils, including lavender. I haven’t looked too deeply into this yet (not sure of concentration needed to cause alarm), but I thought I’d call this to your attention: https://www.google.com/search?q=lavender oil&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi0lP2b0avaAhURMd8KHfaHCncQ_AUIDCgD&biw=1388&bih=908 Any thoughts on this? Does this change your opinion of the Babo Botanical and Baby Mantra products, both of which contain lavender?

Jackie

Hello,
You say stay away from fragrance but one of the stuff you recommend and you use on your kids is the Babo bubble bath Lavender, where does the lavender come from?
thanks

Missy

What do you think of Babyganics?

Ashley

Never mind! I see that you already responded to that :)

Ashley

I thought Carrageenan was a bad ingredient but it is listed in the Babo bubble bath…?

Maia James

Yes! Totally safe!

Maia James

It doesn’t mean anything in terms of safety, but I’ll look into this brand!

NK
