What's Actually in Your Coffee?

Most people don't realize that conventional coffee is one of the most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops in the world. Beyond pesticides, coffee can harbor mold toxins (mycotoxins), acrylamide from roasting, and harmful chemicals that leach from low-quality coffee bags. Brands like Folgers and Maxwell House have faced scrutiny for exactly these reasons.

Pesticides & Herbicides

Non-organic coffee is routinely treated with synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Choosing certified organic coffee is the single most effective way to avoid these residues in your morning cup.

Mold & Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring fungal toxins that can develop during coffee storage and processing. High-quality, single-origin coffees processed with care tend to have significantly lower mycotoxin levels.

Coffee Bags & Packaging

Even clean coffee can be compromised by its packaging. We prioritize brands that use compostable or non-toxic packaging — not plastic-lined bags that can leach chemicals into your beans over time.

How We Choose Clean Coffee

Every coffee in our shop is certified organic, sourced from farms with transparent practices, and packaged responsibly. We've done the research so you don't have to. Want the full breakdown? Read our complete guide: Toxins in Coffee: 7 Sources of Harmful Chemicals in Your Morning Brew

How We Vet

We screen coffee for: USDA Organic certification (required — no exceptions, as organic certification is the only reliable way to verify pesticide-free growing practices at scale), single-origin or traceable sourcing with disclosed farm or cooperative relationships, low-mycotoxin processing practices (wet or honey processing methods, rapid drying, and proper storage conditions that minimize mold development), non-toxic packaging (no plastic-lined bags that can leach into beans over extended storage), and third-party testing or transparency around acrylamide levels where available. We do not carry blends with undisclosed origin, coffees from brands that cannot verify their organic supply chain, or products in packaging with PFAS coatings or synthetic liners. Roast level and freshness matter too — we favor brands that roast to order or provide clear roast dates, as stale coffee has both worse flavor and higher oxidation byproduct levels.

Coffee FAQs

  • Conventional coffee can contain pesticide residues, mycotoxins (mold toxins), acrylamide (formed during roasting), and chemicals that leach from low-quality packaging. Choosing certified organic coffee from reputable brands significantly reduces your exposure to these toxins.

  • Folgers is a conventional, non-organic coffee that is not tested for pesticide residues or mycotoxins. Like most mass-market coffees, it may contain traces of synthetic pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. We recommend switching to a certified organic alternative.

  • Maxwell House is also a conventional coffee brand with no organic certification. It may contain pesticide residues and has not been vetted for mycotoxin levels. We only carry coffees that meet our strict standards for purity and safety.

  • Coffee itself isn't a toxin, but it can contain toxins depending on how it's grown, processed, and packaged. Organic, single-origin coffees processed with care are your safest bet for a clean cup.

  • We recommend avoiding conventional grocery store brands that aren't certified organic, use plastic-lined packaging, or don't disclose their sourcing and processing practices.

  • Clean coffee is certified organic (no synthetic pesticides), sourced from farms with transparent practices, processed to minimize mold risk, and packaged in compostable or non-toxic materials.
