The Red Light Maia Uses
I have both the Mito mask and the LUMEBOX. Both use the gold-standard wavelengths for anti-agind — around 660nm red and 850nm NIR. The mask also offers other light modes for acne and skin concerns, but I’ll focus on anti-aging here.
Here’s how I think about the difference:
LUMEBOX: Very high irradiance up close (≈140 mW/cm² at contact), but it drops quickly with distance. You also have to move it around to cover your whole face (it won’t reach the sides if you just hold it straight in front of you). That said, it’s the most powerful option if you don’t mind holding it close to specific areas (forehead lines, joints, etc.). I use it 3–5 times a week, and because it’s so strong, even fewer sessions can make a difference.
Mito mask: Still high irradiance, but even coverage across your whole face since it sits much closer to your skin. More convenient than the box, but slightly less powerful, so you’ll want to use 3-5 times a week conistently.
Does Red Light Therapy Work?
Yes — but the better question is: what does it treat, and what results can you realistically expect?
The list of conditions RLT is claimed to help is long: wrinkles, collagen production, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, psoriasis, wound healing, arthritis, hair regrowth, eyesight, PTSD, depression, and traumatic brain injury — among others.
Here's the thing: there's real data behind most of these claims. After reviewing the literature, Dr. Hopkins concluded that RLT may genuinely help with most, if not all, of these conditions.
That said, two important questions shaped our device recommendations:
- What does it take to get real results in a lab versus at home with a consumer device?
- How much do individual differences — like skin tone — affect outcomes?
One consistent finding: RLT tends to work best where there's already damage. You're more likely to see dramatic improvement in skin that's already showing wrinkles or sagging than in younger skin with minor fine lines.
As long as you go in with realistic expectations, Dr. Hopkins enthusiastically recommends giving RLT a try.
Benefits of RLT Are Like Exercise
Dr. Hopkins likes to compare RLT to moderate cardio. We know exercise benefits us in countless ways — all backed by controlled studies. We know it's not harmful when done in moderation. And we've accepted that the exact "optimal dose" varies from person to person.
RLT works the same way. And Dr. Hopkins says that's actually more exciting than it sounds — for three reasons:
- RLT is easy — much easier than working out — as long as you can invest in a quality device.
- The research is solid. There are tons of lab studies showing effective RLT treatments. You can model your routine after a successful study and reasonably expect positive results.
- You'll likely get more than you bargained for. Even if you don't see the specific result you were hoping for, RLT has wide-ranging benefits. You'll probably notice improvements you weren't even targeting — just like starting a fitness routine.
What Does Red Light Therapy Treat?
We've established that RLT is safe and beneficial. But what exactly does it treat?
We asked Dr. Hopkins to separate the legitimate uses from the false claims. He found strong scientific evidence supporting RLT for a surprisingly wide range of conditions — and in many cases, enough data on dosage to give specific usage guidance (more on that below).
Here's a non-exhaustive list of what RLT is purported to treat:
- Wrinkles, elasticity, and collagen production
- Cellulite
- Hyperpigmentation
- Rosacea and psoriasis
- Acne
- Wound healing
- Arthritis
- Muscle strength and recovery
- Gum health
- Hair regrowth
- Eyesight
- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- Anxiety
- Immune system support
- PTSD
- Depression
- Traumatic brain injury
- Cancer
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Neuropathy
We know — it sounds too good to be true. But there's real data behind all of these claims, and many conditions have a wealth of scientific support.
The honest caveat: without controlled studies defining optimal dosage parameters, we can't guarantee specific results. Dr. Hopkins puts it this way: "RLT can safely be used for many conditions, and users can replicate the dosage from published studies to optimize their own results with an expectation of improvement and no risk of harm."
His bottom line on at-home devices: Superficial skin issues — wrinkles, discoloration, eczema, bruising, scars, fine lines, and muscle or joint pain — are the best candidates for home RLT. Deeper tissue effects (anything brain-related like PTSD or Alzheimer's) are harder to achieve with consumer devices, which are less powerful than the lasers used in clinical trials.

How Much is Enough? Determining the Correct Dosage
RLT follows what scientists call a hormetic curve — meaning there's a sweet spot. Too little has no effect. The right amount produces benefits. Too much can be harmful. You see this with heat, salt, oxygen, and stress too.
The catch with RLT: we don't yet know exactly where that sweet spot is. But here's the good news — the data strongly suggest that no consumer-grade home device can get you into the "too much" zone when used as directed. More powerful is better, and you don't need to worry about overdoing it.
What to look for in irradiance: The best at-home red light devices deliver at least 50 mW/cm² at a typical use distance of 6–12 inches. If you're using a form-fitting device like the Celluma Pro or a helmet like the iRestore, irradiance may be lower — but since it's in direct contact with your skin, you still get effective delivery.
How often and how long? Results vary, but most studies suggest using your device on the target area several times a week for at least a month before evaluating results.
A note on value: The RedDot unit is significantly less expensive than comparable devices. It's essentially identical to the Rouge unit, and outperforms the Mito unit on irradiance.
What About Blue/Green/Amber Light?
Acne is the one condition that responds better to blue light than red — likely due to its antimicrobial properties. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) may also respond better to blue, green, and yellow light. That said, blue light can damage skin, disrupt sleep cycles, and harm retinal cells. We don't recommend using it at home.
Red Light Therapy for Different Skin Tones
FDA clearance for OTC red light devices is limited to people with lighter skin tones. In general, the less melanin in your skin, the deeper the light can penetrate — and the more effective RLT will be. Melanin absorbs a significant portion of the light before it reaches deeper cells.
FDA 510 Clearance
Full FDA approval requires extensive clinical trials and costs millions of dollars. For low-risk medical devices, there's a faster path: 510(k) Clearance. Companies just need to show their device is equivalent in safety and function to a previously cleared device.
The downside: this process rewards copycat designs over innovation. Still, you should always confirm any device you buy has received FDA 510(k) Clearance.
Pulsed Versus Continuous Wave
Ignore "pulsed light" marketing claims. For home RLT devices, it doesn't matter. Pulsed light is only relevant for high-powered lasers, where it prevents skin damage by allowing heat to dissipate between pulses. Consumer LED devices simply aren't powerful enough for this to be a factor.
How to Use Your RLT Device
Bought a device and want to know how to use it? Here are Dr. Hopkins' recommendations, each backed by at least one clinical paper. Note that all conditions below are supported by multiple published trials.
Wound Healing
- 633nm at 96 J/cm² — apply immediately after surgery, again at 48 hours, then twice the following week. Mean healing time: 13.5 days vs. 26.8 days in untreated patients. (Trelles & Allones, 2006, via Ablon 2018)
- 830nm at 55 J/cm² + 633nm at 98 J/cm² — apply post-surgery, repeat at 72 hours, then 3 more times that week. Exudation, crusting, pain, and swelling resolved ~50% faster. (Trelles et al., 2006, via Ablon 2018)
Pain
- 810nm at 27 J/cm² — 12 sessions of 20 minutes each. Combined with exercise, this improved chronic lower back pain at 12-week follow-up. (Djavid et al., 2007)
Skin Appearance (wrinkles, age spots, elasticity)
- 633nm at 96 J/cm² — 20-minute sessions, 3x/week for 3 weeks. Resulted in reduced wrinkles and smoother skin per blind third-party assessment. (Bhat et al., 2005)
- 611–650nm — significant improvements in complexion, texture, roughness, and collagen density vs. controls. (Wunsch & Matuschka, 2014)
Psoriasis
- 830nm at 60 J/cm² + 633nm at 126 J/cm² — two 20-minute sessions per week for 4–5 weeks. Result: 60–100% clearance in treated patients. (Ablon, 2010)
Hair Regrowth
- 655nm (±20nm) — double-blind study found a significant effect on hair growth in men vs. placebo. (Lanzafame et al., 2013)
Muscle Recovery
- 630nm at 24 J/cm² — single post-workout treatment significantly reduced muscle soreness, strength loss, and reduced range of motion for up to 96 hours after an eccentric workout. (Borges, Cerqueira, dos Santos Rocha et al.)
Retinal Health (Eyesight)
- 670nm — no impact in younger users, but significant improvements in color contrast sensitivity and low-light visual acuity in people 40 and over. (Shinhmar et al., 2020)

What about Megelin? I was looking to get the EMS toning leggings and vest and the vitalux laser and therapy wear for a friend that has cancer but was unsure if this product is worth the high price? These are sensitive areas so always best to ask the best! I do already own the Mito light I bought off your site but wanted something more direct and easy to wear for my friend.

I have read everything you have posted, but I don’t see anything on using it if you have melanoma. I had it cut out of my cheek. There’s a significant scar and heard that you shouldn’t use red light if you have cancer. is this true?
