How to Choose a Safe Body Lotion or Oil
Most people read food labels carefully but never look twice at their lotion. Here’s what to know:
The Fragrance Problem
"Fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient label is a legally protected trade secret that can represent a blend of hundreds of chemicals — including known allergens, hormone disruptors, and sensitizers. It’s the single most important ingredient to avoid in body care. Even products labeled "natural fragrance" can contain synthetic compounds. The cleanest option is fragrance-free; products scented only with essential oils are a better alternative to synthetic fragrance but can still cause sensitivity in some people.
Parabens & Preservatives
Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) are preservatives that mimic estrogen and have been detected in breast tissue. They’re still widely used in conventional lotions. Cleaner preservative alternatives include phenoxyethanol (at low concentrations), sodium benzoate, and potassium sorbate. Avoid formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and imidazolidinyl urea regardless of what else is in the formula.
Oils vs. Lotions
Pure plant oils — jojoba, argan, rosehip, marula, squalane — are inherently simple products with minimal preservation needs, making them among the cleanest moisturizing options available. They’re ideal for people with sensitive skin or chemical sensitivities. Lotions require emulsifiers and preservatives by nature (they’re water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions), so ingredient scrutiny matters more. If you’re simplifying your routine, a single well-sourced plant oil applied to damp skin can replace multiple conventional products.
What "Clean" Actually Means
"Clean beauty" has no legal definition, so it’s frequently used as marketing. The only way to verify a lotion is genuinely clean is to read the full ingredient list and check it against a reliable standard — EWG’s Skin Deep database is a good starting point. EWG Verified is a more rigorous certification that requires full ingredient disclosure and excludes ingredients of concern. We’ve done that screening for every product in this collection so you don’t have to.
