How to Choose Safe Breastfeeding Supplies
Breastfeeding products sit at the intersection of maternal and infant safety — here’s what to evaluate in each category:
Nipple Creams & Balms
The safest nipple creams are made from a single ingredient or very few food-safe ingredients — lanolin (from wool), organic coconut oil, organic shea butter, or organic sunflower oil are all well-tolerated and infant-safe. The key requirement is that the cream doesn’t need to be wiped off before nursing, which means everything in it must be safe for your baby to ingest in small amounts. Avoid any nipple cream with synthetic fragrance, parabens, petroleum-derived ingredients (petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin), or preservatives like MIT, phenoxyethanol at high concentrations, or benzoates. Medical-grade lanolin (like Lansinoh) has a long safety record and is widely recommended by lactation consultants.
Breast Pumps & Accessories
For breast pump parts that contact milk — flanges, valves, membranes, and bottles — look for BPA-free, BPS-free, and phthalate-free materials. Food-grade silicone is the cleanest option for parts in direct contact with milk and is easy to sterilize. Avoid older or third-party pump parts of unknown material composition, particularly flanges and tubing from unverified manufacturers. Milk should never contact the pump motor or tubing — if backflow occurs, replace parts immediately and check that your pump has an effective backflow protector.
Milk Storage
For milk storage, glass bottles and food-grade silicone bags are the cleanest options — no leaching risk and easy to sterilize. If using plastic storage bags, look for BPA-free and BPS-free specifically, and avoid heating milk in plastic containers of any kind since heat accelerates chemical leaching. Do not microwave breast milk — beyond plastic concerns, it creates hot spots and degrades immunological components of the milk.
Nursing Pads & Covers
For nursing pads, organic cotton or bamboo are the cleanest options — free from synthetic fibers, chemical finishes, and fragrance. Disposable pads often contain superabsorbent polymers and synthetic materials — reusable organic cotton pads are both cleaner and more economical. For nursing covers and wraps, OEKO-TEX certified fabric is a meaningful signal of low harmful substance content.
