Not all water filters are created equal. The right system depends on what's in your water, your budget, and how much filtration you need. Here's how we think about it.

Gravity Filters: Simple & Effective

Gravity-fed systems like the Big Berkey are our top pick for most households. They require no installation, no electricity, and no plumbing — just pour water in the top and gravity does the work. They're excellent at removing a wide range of contaminants including PFAS, heavy metals, and bacteria.

Reverse Osmosis: The Most Thorough Option

If you want the most comprehensive filtration available, reverse osmosis (RO) is hard to beat. RO systems remove up to 99% of contaminants including nitrates, fluoride, and microplastics. The trade-off is that they require under-sink installation and waste some water in the process.

Pitcher Filters: Convenient but Limited

Pitcher filters like Brita are convenient and affordable, but they're not designed to remove PFAS, heavy metals, or microplastics. We recommend them only as a starting point — not as a long-term solution for households concerned about water quality.

Every filter in our shop has been evaluated for its ability to remove the contaminants most commonly found in US tap water, including PFAS, chlorine byproducts, lead, and microplastics. We screen water filters for: verified contaminant reduction claims — we require NSF/ANSI certification or independent third-party laboratory testing, not manufacturer claims alone; NSF/ANSI 53 certification for health-based contaminant reduction (lead, VOCs, cysts, PFAS where applicable); NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis systems; NSF/ANSI 42 for aesthetic contaminants (chlorine, taste, odor); and for PFAS specifically, we look for NSF/ANSI 58 or NSF P473 certification for PFAS reduction, as this is an emerging standard and many filters claim PFAS removal without certification. We also screen filter materials for secondary contamination — some filter housings, membranes, and cartridge components can leach plasticizers, BPA, or other compounds into filtered water, defeating the purpose; we prefer filters with NSF/ANSI 61 certification for materials in contact with drinking water. We evaluate filter capacity, replacement frequency, and cost-per-gallon as part of our overall assessment — a filter that requires frequent replacement or fails at real-world flow rates isn’t practical regardless of its certification. We do not carry filters that rely solely on marketing claims without independent testing data.
