Finding a truly non-toxic sunscreen is one of the most confusing tasks in clean beauty — the ingredient lists are long, the marketing claims are misleading, and many "natural" sunscreens still contain chemicals we'd rather avoid. After years of testing and researching sunscreen safety, we've curated only the sunscreens we'd put on our own kids. Every option below is free from oxybenzone, octinoxate, parabens, and other harmful chemicals, and uses mineral-based UV filters we trust.

How to Choose a Non-Toxic Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens labeled "clean" or "natural" are actually safe. Here's what to look for — and what to avoid.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as physical UV blockers that sit on top of the skin. Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and avobenzone that absorb into the skin and bloodstream. We only carry mineral-based sunscreens.

We screen sunscreens for: no oxybenzone (a chemical UV filter with significant endocrine disruption evidence — detected in blood, urine, and breast milk after single-day application, and banned in Hawaii and several other jurisdictions for reef damage); no octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, or avobenzone — the full suite of chemical UV filters, all of which penetrate skin and enter systemic circulation at concentrations that exceed FDA’s safe threshold based on the agency’s own 2019 proposed rule; no synthetic fragrance; no parabens; no methylisothiazolinone or methylchloroisothiazolinone (common preservatives and frequent contact allergens); and no nanoparticles without safety substantiation — we prefer non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient, which sits on the skin surface rather than penetrating, has no systemic absorption concerns, and provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection without the endocrine disruption profile of chemical filters. We require SPF verification and broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB) coverage. We also evaluate formulation elegance — mineral sunscreens have historically had white cast and texture issues that have been largely solved in modern formulations, and we only carry products that are genuinely wearable for daily use.

  • Spray sunscreens can be safe if they use mineral-based ingredients like zinc oxide, but there are a few important caveats. The FDA has raised concerns about inhaling aerosolized sunscreen particles, so sprays should never be applied directly to the face or used around children's mouths and noses. We recommend spraying into your hands first and then applying. Avoid spray sunscreens with chemical UV filters like oxybenzone or homosalate, as inhalation increases absorption risk. The mineral spray sunscreens in our collection are vetted to be as safe as possible.

  • EWG Verified is a certification from the Environmental Working Group that means a product meets their strictest standards for ingredient safety, transparency, and manufacturing practices. For sunscreen specifically, EWG Verified products use only safe UV filters (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), disclose all ingredients fully, avoid EWG's "unacceptable" chemicals, and are made in facilities that meet good manufacturing standards. It's one of the most rigorous third-party certifications available for personal care products and a strong signal that a sunscreen is genuinely non-toxic.

  • Aluminum is not a common sunscreen ingredient — you may be thinking of aluminum in deodorant or antiperspirant. The mineral UV filters used in sunscreen are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, not aluminum. That said, if you see aluminum compounds listed in a sunscreen formula, we'd recommend avoiding it. The sunscreens in our collection use only zinc oxide as the active ingredient and are free from aluminum compounds.
