Organic Da Hong Pao Tea (大红袍) is a premium rock oolong from the mountainous regions of Enshi Prefecture in southwestern Hubei Province. Nearly fully oxidized, it brews a deep mahogany red with rich notes of cinnamon, plum, and caramel. Smooth, robust, and free of bitterness, this loose-leaf oolong offers a layered, elegant flavor suitable for both daily enjoyment and special occasions.
Leaves can be reused for multiple infusions, with some drinkers performing a short initial “wash” to awaken the flavors. Fair Trade certified and organically grown, this Da Hong Pao stands out as a refined example of classic Chinese oolong.
Historical Note: The name “Da Hong Pao” or “Big Red Robe” dates to 1385 during the Ming Dynasty. Scholar Ju Zi Ding fell ill while traveling to the imperial exams. A monk offered him a restorative tea, enabling his recovery and success. In gratitude, Ju Zi Ding wrapped his scarlet robe around the tea bush, giving the tea its iconic name and legendary status.
