The Best Natural Soap Guide 2025

Finding the Best Natural Soap

I admit that I love a body wash (specifically, this one), but bar soap is a much more planet-friendly choice (it's almost always plastic-free!). Bar soap is also one of the easiest products to get right when it comes to clean, safe ingredients. Unlike other categories we investigate here--like laundry detergent or shampoo--you don’t need complex formulations to make an effective cleanser. The best non-toxic bar soap is really just just saponified oils with maybe some clay or essential oil for scent.

But because this category is so simple, we hold it to an even higher standard. Our guide goes further than most: to help you identify the the best non-toxic bar soap — the ones that really do everything right.

In this guide, you’ll see how we separate soaps into Best, Good, Okay, Bad, and Sneaky Stuff. Only the bars with the cleanest ingredients, responsible sourcing, and zero unnecessary additives make it into our “Best Stuff” category.

In terms of performance, bar soaps were much easier to review than something like deodorant; unless a soap really dries out my skin or smells offensive, I feel that it’s done its job! The main criteria for evaluating the best natural soap really comes down to the quality of the ingredients and manufacturing processes. Let's get into it.

What’s Wrong With Conventional Bar Soap?

Depending on the brand, conventional bar soaps might contain any number ingredients we’d prefer you avoid. Look out for the usual Bad Stuff like BHT and PEG chemicals.

Most drugstore “bar soaps” aren’t actually soap at all—they’re detergent bars made with harsh synthetic surfactants, chemical preservatives, and artificial fragrance. These ingredients can dry or irritate skin and introduce hormone-disrupting phthalates.

The biggest concern with most soap is the way it is scented. Unless the label specifies that it contains only essential oils, you should avoid bar soap that has “fragrance” or “parfum” listed in the ingredients.

What Is the Best Natural Soap?

Not all “natural” bar soaps are created equal, which is why we rank them in three tiers. Here’s what sets the best non-toxic bar soap apart:

  • Best Stuff – The very best natural soaps are made with mostly organic oils, clays, and herbs. They’re free from synthetic fragrance, dyes, and preservatives, making them the safest choice for both your skin and for the planet.
  • Good Stuff – These bars are still safe and soap-based, but may use non-organic oils, heavy essential oil blends, or mild eco-friendly synthetics. These bars are far better than mainstream soaps, but not as pure as our Best Stuff.
  • Okay Stuff – These brands are cleaner than drugstore detergent bars, but may contain more conventional oils, phthalate-free synthetic scents, or extra additives. I am still comfortable using the bar soaps in this category, but they are not my top pick.

I hope that the information that follows helps you choose the best non-toxic bar soap more easily. (My personal favorite bars come from Tandi's.)

Bad Stuff

Dial is perhaps not quite as bad as Lever, but does contain fragrance, and several other mildly concerning ingredients, such as PEG-12 and PEG-9.

Lever 2000 bar soap gets an 8 from Skin Deep because of fragrance, retinyl palmitate, and BHT.

Sneaky Stuff

Lots of you ask about Dove bars, because it seems a lot of dermatologists recommended it. While it’s better than most conventional soaps, it contains cocamidopropyl betaine, which is on my personal Never list.

Fresh soap is expensive and it smells nice, but it has a bunch of gross ingredients, including BHT.

Although Ivory claims its soap is”clean and simple, and free of unnecessary ingredients,” it contains fragrance and–in some cases–artificial dyes.

Mrs. Meyers bar soaps–like the rest of the the Mrs. Meyers line–contains synthetic fragrance, making it Sneaky Stuff.

Neutrogena is the brand most recommended by dermatologists, but contains fragrance, cocamide DEA, and triethanolamine.

I hope this guide makes finding the best natural soap easier. You’ll be doing the planet a favor by using bar soap instead of body wash (in a plastic bottle!), too!

How’s Ivory? The 99.44% pure, clean, simple one? Sneaky too?

Maia James

Don’t worry about being a pest! After a cursory look, I think this brand looks fine:).

Jimmy

Hey I hate to be a pest but it really seems you’ve done your research, how do you feel about Chandrika soap? The ingredients seem very lean but “vegetable oils” has me wondering if they could contain something sneaky….

Lisa Argyle

When a soap lists “essential oil”, what brand/type/who makes them? Does the label show that information? (Disclosure: I’m an independent distributor for Young Living and that’s why I ask – I like to know how pure the oils are).
Thanks!

Maia James

I don’t like the ingredients in Dove soap; it’s so easy to make a safe, effective natural bar soap, but Dove’s contains lots of synthetics of questionable safety.

jamila

what about Dove??

Sarah D

thank you, Maia!

Charity Dicus

My doctor does not like this one. Besides, I can’t pronounce half the stuff in it.

Maia James

I don’t know that one but will add it to the list when we update this Guide!

Maia

Sneaky Stuff, unfortunately!

Megan

What do you think of Kirk’s original coco castile bar soap (the no fragrance kind)?
