How to Choose a Non-Toxic Facial Cleanser
Most people wash their face twice a day for decades — making cleanser one of the highest-exposure skincare products you own. Here’s what to look for and avoid:
The Surfactant Problem
Surfactants are the cleansing agents in face wash, and they vary enormously in harshness. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is the most aggressive common surfactant — it strips the skin barrier, disrupts the microbiome, and causes irritation with repeated use, especially for sensitive or dry skin. SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) is milder but can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen, during manufacturing. Gentler alternatives include coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl glutamate, and sodium cocoyl isethionate — plant-derived surfactants that cleanse effectively without stripping. Look for these on ingredient labels instead of SLS/SLES.
Fragrance in Skincare
"Fragrance" or "parfum" on a skincare label is a black box — it can represent dozens of undisclosed synthetic chemicals, including known allergens, phthalates, and musks that accumulate in the body. Fragrance is the leading cause of contact dermatitis from skincare products. For facial cleansers, fragrance-free is strongly preferred over "naturally fragranced" — even essential oils can be sensitizing for some people, particularly citrus oils that are photosensitizing. If you want a scented cleanser, look for products that disclose every aromatic ingredient individually rather than hiding them under "fragrance."
pH Matters More Than You Think
Your skin’s surface has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5–5.5, which supports the microbiome and skin barrier function. Many conventional cleansers — and some "natural" ones — have a pH of 8–9 (highly alkaline), which disrupts the acid mantle and can cause dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity over time. A well-formulated cleanser should have a pH between 4.5 and 6.5. Brands that invest in proper formulation will often publish or confirm their pH on request. Cream and oil cleansers tend to be better pH-balanced than foaming cleansers.
Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type
Dry or sensitive skin: cream or oil cleansers with gentle surfactants, no foam, no exfoliating acids. Look for hydrating ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or plant oils. Oily or acne-prone skin: gentle foaming cleansers with plant-derived surfactants; salicylic acid from willow bark extract is a natural option for mild exfoliation. Combination skin: micellar water or gentle gel cleansers that remove excess oil without stripping dry areas. Avoid physical scrubs with harsh particles — walnut shell powder and apricot kernels have jagged edges that can cause micro-tears. Opt for smooth, round particles like jojoba beads, or use chemical exfoliants (AHAs, BHAs from natural sources) instead.
