Review of Holle Lebenswert Infant Formula

First, read my affiliate disclosure.

As a breastfeed-until-they’re-in-braces type, I never thought I would spend so much time writing about formula! (Here’s our Safe Formula Guide, here’s where I review Honest Company Formula, and here’s where I take two European formulas head to head. But I try to research the topics and products that you’re most worried about, and I hear you loud and clear: formula is number one! So here is more information that I hope will help those of you looking for the healthiest infant formula on the market.

Even Better Stuff: Holle Lebenswert Formula (Stage 1)

I’ve previously stated that if I were formula feeding, I would go with Holle (from Germany). I am happy to report the discovery of a new formula that’s even better than original Holle, which is Lebenswert formula (stage 1 only). Lebenswert features a shorter list of ingredients and one other major upside over regular Holle.

Holle Lebenswert Stage 1 Is Sweetened with Lactose

holle-lebeswert from Gimme the Good Stuff

One of the the biggest problems with Holle’s original formula is that it contains maltodextrin, a cheap sweetener derived from rice, corn, or potatoes that is less similar to the natural sugar found in breast milk. Lebenswert’s stage 1 formula is free of maltodextrin, relying instead upon lactose (which more closely mimics breast milk) to lend sweetness to the formula. Moreover, Lebenswert adheres to Bioland organic guidelines for farmers and manufacturers. These guidelines are even more stringent than the European Union’s Eco-Regulation; you can read more about them here.

Lebenswert does still contain palm oil and canola oil (called “rapeseed oil”), but it is definitely what I would choose if I were formula-feeding. Here’s a complete ingredients list of the stage 1 formula: Organic skimmed milk, organic whey powder (partly demineralised), organic vegetable oils (palm, rapeseed, sunflower oil), lactose, potassium chloride, calcium, vitamin C, sodium chloride, ferrous gluconate, vitamin E, zinc sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, copper sulphate , Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6 , Vitamin A, manganese sulfate, folic acid, potassium iodate, vitamin K1 , sodium selenate, vitamin D.

PLEASE NOTE: Lebenswert formula in stages above 1 DO contain maltodextrin. While these are still “Good Stuff” and on par with original Holle, the review I am providing here only applies to Lebenswert stage 1.

Where to Buy Lebenswert

Because it’s from Germany, Lebenswert is not FDA approved, so it can be challenging to obtain here in the U.S.

I’ve vetted several places to purchase this formula, and am happy to have established affiliate relationships with the following sellers:

  1.  Little Bundle
  2. BabyKind Market
  3. Organic Start (no longer in business)
  4. Organic Baby Food 24 (based in Germany)

Stay sane,

  1. Hi everybody! thanks for the info ? In spain its so dificult to found holle products! By lucky I ordered many times in this site (if someone in spain are looking for):
    https://www.ecobebes.es/holle-leche-potitos-papillas-170

  2. Thanks for sharing this post. I totally appreciate your point that Lebenswert formula is better than Organic formula. This formula contains no cheaper sugar.

  3. I Appreciate your Point, Lebenswert milk is an organic skimmed milk formula and it can be given to infants from birth onwards up to six months. I contain multiple vitamins such as vitamins E or many more which is really helpful for babies.

  4. I like your content very much. I agree with you Lebenswert milk is better than other milk brands for babies. It is highly nutritious and very similar to mother’s milk. You can feed your baby with Lebenswert milk and make him healthy. Thanks for such a valuable content.

  5. Divya Chandrasekar

what are the major nutritional difference between Lebenswert stage1 and 2? i am on stage 2 and would like to go back to stage 1.

  6. Michelle

Hey! Can I ask you what you think about this product for my 9 month old who I think is lactose intolerant? She seems to be having issues from any dairy products. I have found a formula that is dairt free – Hipp Baby HA. Doesn’t this Lebenswert have milk in it? Do you know if it’s lactose free milk?

  7. Stephanie king

Do you know the calories per ounce for lebenswert stage 1?

  8. megan

In the list of ingredients I’m not seeing Vitamin B12. Is the fact that this formula does not contain Vitamin B12 a concern for infants under 6 months whose only form of nourishment comes from milk?

  9. McCall

Hello! Thanks for all your research. I am thinking about ordering Lebenswert for my son to start trying to supplement at some point – it would be my first choice. He has a dairy protein sensitivity where I have not been able to eat any dairy in my diet while breastfeeding. Do you think because Lebenswert uses lactose as a sweetener he wouldn’t do well with it? My daughter also had this milk protein allergy and it seemed by 6 months she was ok with it, but I used Baby’s Only LactoRelief and never tried anything else. Just curious if you think babies with dairy sensitivity would be ok on this or would do better with Holle? Thanks so much!!

    Hi all!

Just wodnering if you know a reputable retailer in Canada where I could buy Lebenswert or the Dutch Hipp formulas?

    1. Jacqui

      Amazing customer service 🙂

    Hi Maia,

I have recently found out that Holly introduced Stage Pre also uses lactose as its sweetener, i would like to know if it is suitable for a nine months old baby and onward to use? If so, when should I switch to stage 2 or 3 or just stay with the infant formula if she is doing well with it? Thank you.

  12. Jessica

I can only recommend Lebenswert. My Baby is super happy with it and never had any problems regarding digestion since I switched from breast feeding to Lebenswert. I have to admit that first it was kind of a hassle to get a reliable source. Diana said she bought it from organicbabyfood24 but as they are located in Germany it took over 3 weeks to receive it. Luckily I found another shop based in the US that doesn’t charge for shipping and delivery takes usually only 1-2 days. I am super happy with their services and can only recommend it as they have the best prices compared to all the other shops I found so far. organicbabyfood.shop if you are looking for the best pricing/service in the US, this is where you’ll get it.

    Hi Maia,

I noticed that you mentioned in one post that you would use Holle Goat Milk formula for supplementation only (if I understood correctly). I’ve been considering using this as baby’s only source of nutrition from 3 months on. Any reason why you personally wouldn’t?

  14. Nancy

Several retailers in Germany ship to the US. And much much cheaper than both the websites mentioned in the article. They typically charge around $7 for a box (based on the exchange rate as of today) plus $40 shipping. It takes 1 month from placing the order to receive the package in the US. I bought 15 boxes for $144 all in cost. The Holle website lists quite a few retailer websites – email them and they will let you know if they ship to the US.

  15. Lindsey Page

    Hi there

I was wondering you know the site organicbabyfood24. They seem to have good prices on lebenswert stage 1 and can ship quickly

    Thank you
    Lindsey

Is it safe to use lebenswert stage 1 the whole year? I switched to stage 2 because he is 7 months and he is very constipated 🙁

    1. Maia James

I would have to defer to your pediatrician on this one!

  17. Alexandra

Does anyone know whether it’s ok to mix the Lebenswert Stage 1 powder will boiled water that’s at room temperature? Can the formula be stored in the refrigerator for us up to 48 hours like American formulas? Thank you!

  19. Paul

Thank you for your reviews! My wife and I are adopting a baby girl and have chosen Lebenswert stage 1 to feed her. Can you mix up enough for the whole day and refrigerate it (warming it up as needed?)

  20. Aimee

Hi, Maia! Do you know anything about the organic formula retailer Formuland? Thanks!

  21. Ali

My LO seems to be very gassy with the HIPP Organic. Would you recommend this Formula over the Hipp Stage 1?

  22. Carolina

Hi – My sister had to stop breastfeeding due to an illness and we have been researching formulas – of which your work/site has provided a lot of great info – thank you

Question – What are your thoughts on Holle formula purchased from BEYOND BABY ORGANIC?
    – we tried purchasing from Little World Organics… but they were out of town.

Thank you for your help in advance.

    1. Maia James

I have not had luck with BOB getting back to me, and I know a few people who have tried to order from them and been unhappy with the customer service. Did you try Organic Munchkin?

Thanks for all your detailed research! I have to feed my baby formula since he had oral issues and never latched properly. I pump some, but need to supplement. I am switching from Holle 2 to LEBENSWERT Stage 1 per your research and will update with how it goes. I am curious if you ever researched MyOrganicFormula as one of the distributors here in the US? Thanks so much!

    1. Maia James

I haven’t looked into MyOrganicFormula, so I am sorry that I can’t say one way or another about them.

  26. Natalia

How does one prepare the Holle/Lebenswert formula? I have the instructions, but my question is more specific: how in the world am I supposed to cool the boiled water down to 50 degrees Celsius? Stick a thermometer in the water after I take it off the stove and stare at the thermometer until the mercury goes down to 50? I am European and I understand the metric system as well as Celsius degrees, so that is not the issue–but rather, how on earth can anyone get to that precise temperature? I am happy to approximate, obviously, since it is well known that lukewarm water dissolves anything better than room temperature water. But is approximating acceptable? Uber thanks.

  27. The best customer service, and lowest price in the US with free fast shipping.
Organicbaby15.com is an amazing place to shop for my little once

  28. Elsie

I understand that Lebenswert 1- 0+ months doesn’t have maltodextrinbut Lebenswert 2- 6+ months. But what makes the two formulas different?(is the nutrient difference really that much?) Is it ok to give Lebenswert 1 to a 10 month old?

    Back story:
My son was exclusively breastfeed for 9 months. We had latching problems an i had to pump so when I saw breast feed I guess I mean feed breast milk. ( I wasn’t lucky enough to have the pleasure of actually breastfeeding, but you do what you can right?) Any who, after 9+ months my milk supply has gone down significantly and my son has depleted his frozen milk stash. 🙁 Formula has been my only option for the past two weeks because Im lucky if I express 10 oz a day. Im really worried about the chemicals in conventional formula and being that I want through so much just for my son to have breast milk I don’t want to give him just anything. Please help!! Its pretty urgent 🙁

    1. Elsie

P.s. I plan on mixing about 1 or 2 oz of breast milk with each bottle as long as I can

    2. Maia James

I do know people who stick with stage 1, but you should have your pediatrician take a look to determine if it meets the nutritional needs of your baby. You can also check out Sammy’s Milk and Plum Organics for two American brands of Good Stuff:).

  29. Adelina

I’ve been going back to your blog for insights during the last couple of months. Thanks so much for doing all the research!

I’ve been feeding my LO Holle stage 1 and he’s approaching 5 months in 2 weeks. I’m planning to give him Lebenswert stage 1 now, but I still have 8 boxes of Holle stage 1. Can I mix 50/50 of the Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1 in the same bottle to feed him? I’ve been looking around online for Lebenswert nutritional info from its package, but couldn’t find anything. I’m trying to compare the Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1 nutritional values. Also, I couldn’t locate Iron on the Holle box – does it list under a different name ? I didn’t see eisen listed, which I understood is iron in German….

    Your input is greatly appreciated!!

  30. Natalie

My 5 mo old has been ebf until this week I supplemented with one bottle (5oz) of Lebenswert 1 on Monday and have done so everyday. However on Friday and Saturday she developed hives all over her body after drinking the bottle. On Sunday she threw up and the hives also came back.
She isn’t itchy or fussy. And the hives go away after a few hours on their own. Has this happened to anyone? Where do I go from here?

    1. Maia James

Hi Natalie. I would recommend you visit your pediatrician. They’ll be able to give you information specific to your baby. Or perhaps someone here can jump in with a similar experience.

      1. Natalie Vigilante

Sorry for such a delayed reply but thank you for your answer. I tired Holle Hypoallergenic and Baby’s Only….the same thing happened, she would break out in hives. Anyway, I am still breast feeding but supplementing with one bottle a day of Baby’s Only Soy – it’s the only one that doesn’t cause hives! We think it is a milk based allergy. We will be revisiting milk soon at 12 months. If anyone else has had this issue I would love to hear the outcome.
But Maia thank you for responding! It means a lot.

  31. Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me what the calorie and fat values are in the Holle Stage 2 & 3 And In the Lebenswert Stage 2 & 3..
Can you suggest a good first cereal as well from Holle company that is easy digestible for sensitive bellie.

  32. Tracy

We order our Lebenswert formulas from Natural Baby Organics, they have the lowest prices that we found and ship for free. http://www.naturalbabyorganics.com

  33. Amy

Deciding between Lebenswert stage 1 and the Holle Goats Milk formula as supplementation for my 6 month old EBF baby, I need help! Concerned about all that has been brought up about Lebenswert but it still seems like the better of the options out there. But what about the goats milk version or Sammys Milk?

  34. Amy

Is the folic acid listed man made folic acid or natural folate? I am really struggling to find a formula with natural folate. Not sure there are any out there.

  35. Kristin York

Is there any reason why you would need to go up to Lebenwerts 2? My son is 10 months, and I still have him on Level 1. Also, is Lebenwerts a Holle brand? I don’t see where it looks like they are affiliated on the box.

    1. Maia James

I know lots of people who never switch from 1, but you should check with your pediatrician. And yes, Lebenswert is made by Holle:).

  36. Lisa

Please help! I’m am in the process of purchasing Some formula and I need to choose between Holle stage 1 and Lebenswert stage 1. My son is 3 months old and I’ve been exclusively breastfeeding. Initially I had an over production of milk and I was pumping 10oz or more from each breast. However, with recent stresses my milk supply has been steadily decreasing and I can’t bear to hear my son cry because he’s not fully satisfied or because it takes a bit of time for my milk to come down when he’s ready to eat. My concern is the Lactose in Lebenswert. My son seems to be gassy and therefor uncomfortable and id hate to compound that issue. But the maltodextrin or sugar used in Holle doesnt seem appealing either. He’s taking vitamin d drops, will I need to get him probiotics once he starts using formula? I plan to continue breastfeeding, I have herbal/organic tea that seems to be helping but as I wait for my supply to increase I need to feed him adequately. Please help!!!!!!!! -Lisa

    1. Maia James

Hi Lisa, unfortunately, we can’t give medical advice about specific situations. I’d have to defer to your pediatrician about whether or not the lactose might be a problem for your baby. Best of luck!

  37. Karen

Hi have you reviewed Sammys milk yet?? Anxiously waiting! Sorry my previous post was sent to the vendors but if you can answer any concerns thatd be great! Thank you

    1. Maia James

We haven’t published a formal review, but Sammy’s is Good Stuff:)

  38. Karen

Hello, I heard lebenswert is the best option out there but after researching I have some unanswered concerns I hope you can answer?

    1. Hipp was found to have high aluminum levels, because of their foil packaging? So Im assuming lebenswert has the same issue because its also in foil? Any testing done for lebenswert?

    2. Lebenswert had a recall 2 years ago due to atropine and scopalamine and clostridium spores contamination. How did you handle the recall? Did you speak with them to hear if they corrected their practice? How would you handle a future recall?

    3. According to a german testing site, “testberichte,” lebenswert has high levels of 3-MCPD… Which can cause tumors. Have you heard or found anything regarding this/ them trying to reduce levels?

I found lebenswert was the “best” of the best, however with all these red flags, are there other products you are aware of that may be better??

Have you reviewed Sammys milk yet??? Waiting for your review please!!!

Thank you, hope to hear from you soon!

    Karen

    1. Alexa

have you found any feedback on this issues you have posted regarding lebenswert?

  39. nick

3csorganic. com carries HiPP, Holle and Lebenswert formulas, even the HiPP Dutch version formula. They are based out of Rock Hill, SC and offer free priority shipping on all orders and overnight shipping available too for extra i believe. I just ordered some stage 1 Lebenswert from them yesterday for 28.99 and it is set to arrive at my house today. That is due to me being located about 70 miles away from them. I believe they say typical mailing times range from 1-3 days. My order was processed within 15 minutes of placing the order and in the mail within a hour of ordering.

Hello! I just purchased a box of Holle Lebenswert Stage 1 and a box of the goats milk formula. I’ve been premixing Baby’s Only formula in the Dr Brown’s pitcher, bottling enough for 24 hours worth of feedings, storing in fridge, then heating up in bottle warmer to room temp. Can I do the same with the Holle Lebenswert Stage 1? Thanks!

    1. Maia James

This is a question for whomever you purchased the formula from, or your pediatrician. We aren’t qualified to give this kind of specific advice. Best of luck!

  42. HELP! very desperate mom looking to find a formula that will make baby happy! we’ve had feeding issues from the get go which turned out to be heart issues. Because of this, I was not able to nurse because the calorie count was not enough for my little man. this turned into pumping exclusively which turned into mastitis and thrush and my supply saying ADIOS!! Since then, we’ve been struggling to find a formula that will make baby’s tummy happy. Just received this formula and praying it’s the miracle I’ve been waiting for, but am looking at how to make it 27cal per oz. THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!!

  43. Athena Ayers

Hi there Maia! Love the research you’ve done! I know it is time consuming as I started the process while my baby was in NICU and I was not producing enough milk to feed her. I was so HAPPY to find your site! My question is about Lebenswert. I recently switched my daughter to Lebenswert from Similac Neosure. Where can I find the nutrient concentration for Lebenswert? For example: I want to see what concentration of potassium is in 3 oz, etc.Thank You!

    1. Maia James

If you reach out to Little World Organics, Lacey can give you all the info. You can tell her I sent you!

  44. Nelsol

    Question on expiration.

I’ve read on another site that the formula is only good for two weeks upon opening the packaging. Can you confirm if this is the case? Thanks.

  45. Ann

    Hello Maia,

Thank you for all the information you provide on your website. I could not seem to find a promised review of Baby’s Only Whey protein formula on your site so I figured I could ask my question here. I understand that Lebenswert is one of the best formula options but my concern is that it has palm oil. The Baby’s Only whey formula seem to have gotten through a change and they don’t have Taurine in the ingredients unlike their regular Dairy formula. Although they still have soy lecithin and soybean oil in there. My question is what’s a bigger concern as ingredients in formula: palm oil ( that apparently forms “soap” in baby’s gut) or synthetic ingredients( if there’s any left in Baby’s only whey protein formula)? And if there’re any synthetic ingredients in the Baby’s Only whey formula can you please point them out?

    1. Maia James

Yes, Baby’s Only Whey is a great option if you’re worried about palm oil. Also, check out Sammy’s Milk. We are working on a review of goat milk formula, and I’m really excited about what I’ve learned about this company.

I am using lebenswert stage 1 and we love it. My daughter is now 6 months and was wondering about moving to stage 2. I am concerned about the maltodextrin in the higher stages. What are your thoughts on continuing with stage 1 or moving to stage 2?

  48. Meg

My six week old daughter is on Lebenswert Stage 1 formula but I’m not sure if stage 1 has iron. Can someone tell me if it does?

    1. Maia James

      Yes, it does contain iron.

      1. Meg

Do you know how much iron? Also, when I switched my baby from Similac to lebenswert she started eating less and falling asleep at the bottle then waking up hungry for more. Has anyone had this issue??

  49. Eric

As a concerned father I wanted to get the best formula I could after my wife had to supplement due to low milk supply. My search led me initially to holle and then switched to lebenswert and I am very pleased with both. I made my first 5 or so purchases from organicmumchkin.com and was happy with the service receiving my orders in about 3 days every time. However at $30 per box it was putting a dent in the wallet so I explored other options. Although very hesitant I placed an order from biologish24 for 25 boxes and was prepared to wait up to 40 days as others have due to customs. I am happy to say that my order actually arrived to my doorstep on the east coast exactly 2 weeks after placing the order. I was nervous about the purchase up until it arrived but am glad to share that everything went like clockwork and the best part is I saved a ton of money! With the shipping fees it came out to about $12 per box, a huge savings. I know some have not had such a good experience ordering from overseas with their packages bring held by customs but I am extremely satisfied after my first order and I estimate I saved about $400 buying direct from Germany. I have no affiliations with the site and if needed I would order from organicmumchkin.com again but just trying to share some money saving advice.

  50. Jed Garfunkel

    Hi Maia,

Thank you for all your research and advice! After reading through this review and all these comments and your Safe Infant Formula Guide, I am confused about the benefits of Holle Lebenswert Infant Formula versus Baby’s Only Organic Formula. If you consider that they are both sweetened with Lactose and the Baby’s Only is a third of the price (on $10 on amazon for approx 360 g Baby’s Organic vs $30 on organicmunchkin for 500 g Holle Lebenswert) and that it is widely available in the US… what are the benefits to choosing Holle Lebenswert Infant Formula? I feel like I’m missing something, but I’m not sure what. Thanks so much!

    1. Maia James

Lebenswert uses milk from biodynamic farms (which is even better than organic), and does not contain soy–the Baby’s Only with Whey (which is the version of BO that doesn’t contain rice syrup), has soy oil and also soy lecithin. These are the two major advantages to Lebenswert.

  51. Leighann Worthen

Have you ever looked into Milupa or Aptamil formulas? Just wondering how these German formulas stack up to Holle and Hipp.

    Thanks

  52. Rachel

What is your opinion about their low fat content

  53. Stephanie

    Maia,

I just discovered your page and want to commend you for your passion towards helping other mamas find healthy solutions for our little ones. I am a mother of two and one more due in August ’16. After breastfeeding the first two exclusively for 12 months each, I have made the decision that I will formula feed our newborn because I now work full time. I am becoming more and more comfortable with this decision as I read about organic formulas, but I could really use some advice from you as well as other moms to figure out this formula thing.

First of all, I have made the decision to use Lebenswert stage 1 formula based on all the great reviews I’ve read and the obvious lactose factor.

    Questions…

**My husband bought me a Baby Brezza and I am wondering if anyone knows about using the European formulas with this machine.
**What kind of water do most of you use to mix formula? From my research, babies DON’T need fluoride, so I’m looking for a solution. Bottled spring water perhaps? Many “non-crunchy” moms I speak with say they just use tap water…?
    **Bottle recommendations?
**Lastly, what is the shelf life of Lebenswert 1 if I were to order in bulk?

Thank you all so much for your advice and opinions. I know that I will need to go over all this with my pediatrician when the baby gets here, but I would like to bring him a “plan” to approve of.

    Stephanie

    1. Maia

      Hi there-
I’m hoping others will chime in, but for bottles I recommend glass or stainless steel, and the Pura is my top choice (since it converts to a sippy, straw, and big kid cup). https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/pura-kiki-insulated-bottle-with-nipple/

I recommend you use filtered water to avoid too much fluoride. More here:

    2. Deanna

Hello, I am currently feeding my 5 month old son Lebenswert stage 1 formula. I am a germaphobe and our city water here is extremely chlorinated due to the “brain eating ameba” that circulates every summer/on hot days. I use the Gerber Pure Water. It has NO fluoride. This is my second child. For my first I used the Nursery Water with the purple label as the pink labeled one has fluoride. The purple labeled one has none. Hope that helps!

  54. Cortney

Does the milk in Holle Lebenswert come from grass fed cows only? That is my doctors concern- that my baby only have grass fed formula.

  55. Susan Pittard

    Maia,
Hello and thanks for the great info on these formulas. I am now using the Lebenswert Formula stage 1 for my 5 month old son. From what I’ve researched so far I don’t think this formula contains DHA, correct? Do you know if it is important to use a supplement to add the DHA in?

    Thank you for any info!
    SP

  56. leanne

is there benefits of using this formula after 1 year instant of whole millk?

    1. maia

Some people think so. I would ask your pediatrician!

  57. Kathleen

    Hi Maia,

Thank you so much for all your research! I am wondering about your thoughts on the advantages of the demeter certified biodynamic cows in the holle 1 formula (where the cows still have their horns–I’ve heard this produces the most nutritious milk-even over organic cows without their horns) versus the benefit of the lactose in the lebenswerth 1 formula? My understanding is that the bioland certification of the lebenswerth doesn’t necessarily mean the cows would still have their horns. Basically, weighing the sugar substitute issue over the highest nutritional milk available. What are your thoughts? Thank you so much!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Kathleen-
I’ve debated this exact issue myself, and ultimately feel like it’s a toss up. I guess I’d choose Lebenswert if it were my baby, but I do think there’s a lot of value in the biodynamic milk!

      1. Sarah

just a quick question, this is my issue as well.. which one to choose. What exactly is so bad about maltodextrin in the original Holle?… and do you think the lower fat content in the lebenswert is something that could be an issue? If the milk is more nutritional in the original Holle, maybe thats why it has more fat content?

        1. Maia James

Maltodextrin is a sweetener usually made of corn and has a very high glycemic index. As for the fat, I would definitely take that question up with your pediatrician:).

          1. Sarah

But you would be ok with feeding your baby the lower fat than required by the FDA? Im just trying to understand if im being over worried about it. Lebenswert has 3.1g of fat… FDA required more than 3.3g. My pediatrician is stupid and thinks that formulas here are fine… they are no help lol

  58. sylvia flores

I do love Lebenswerth and have been using it for my baby. My question is now that she is 6 months, I would move onto stage 2 but that does have maltodextrin. You think it is ok to continue with stage 1 even though she is almost 7 months? Or you recommend going to the next stage?

    1. Maia James

I know lots of families that stick with Stage 1, but you should run the nutritional info of both by your pediatrician.

  59. Shan

What’s the difference between Lebenswert and Hipp Stage 1? Is it (I) fluoride, (II) DHA, (III) unclear aluminum levels in Lebenswert, and (IV) the lactose?

  60. Cristina

How do I know the site I’m using to purchase European (Lebenswert) infant formula is shipping it safely without irradiation?

  61. Lourdes

    Hello,

Can someone please tell me where in the world I can find the complete nutrient information for Holle and Lebenswert formulas? Maia, you are always telling people to consult with their pediatricians about nutrition values on these formulas, but how can I discuss them if I don’t have the information?. Please advise.

    Thank you,
    Lourdes

    1. Maia James

      Hi Lourdes-
If you reach out to Lacey at Little World Organics (you can find her contact info on her site) she will share the info on the specific formula you have questions about.
      Thanks!
      Maia

  62. Jill

I recently purchased Holle stage 1 from you and received shipment in February…the 4 boxes expire March 12, 2016. This is ok because I will use it up by then. Do all your boxes of formula come so close to expiration date? Should this be a concern? Thanks!

    1. Maia

      Hi Jill-
Sorry for your troubles, but we don’t sell any formula on this site. You’ll need to follow up with whomever you purchased it from–best of luck!

  63. Meghan

Can you help me understand the “stages”? I am using formula 2-3 bottles a day to supplement breastmilk with my 9 month old baby. I’ve been using the Lebenswert because of the review above, and I know it say “from birth on”– but at some point am I supposed to stage up? (And then would you recommend Lebenswert stage 2, or Holle stage 2?) Thanks for your help.

    1. Maia James

      Hi Meghan-
I know this is confusing, and usually I recommend people talk to their pediatricians about the specific nutritional needs of each baby. You could also reach out to Lacey at Little World Organics, as she is a formula-feeding mom who understands this topic well, and has provided guidance to other mothers.

    2. Maia James

let me add that if it were my baby and I were using formula only as a supplement to breastmilk, I would stick with Lebenswert Stage 1.

  64. Lacey

Hi there, I am currently breastfeeding my soon-to-be 6-month-old and have noticed he is sensitive when I consume dairy. I have eliminated dairy from my diet, but I’m considering supplementing with formula soon and I’m wondering if you have any reviews/advice on the Holle Goat Milk Formula? Is the goat milk option something you would recommend? Thanks so much!!!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Lacey-
Yes, that’s a good option as a “follow on” formula–as in, as long as it’s used to supplement rather than as 100% of the baby’s nutrition.

  65. Lourdes Dominguez

    Hi Maia,

Thank you for all the research work you’ve done and continue doing! I started my baby on Lebenswert 1 about a month ago and she did great! Unfortunately I only purchased 1 package of the formula, because I wasn’t sure if we were going to like it, and now I cannot get it anywhere!!! Would you suggest I give her Holle 1 or Lebenswert 2? she’s 8 months now.

  66. Leslie L

I read about Holle on your wonderful site and purchased both Holle Organic Infant Formula Milk Stage 1 – 400g and Lebenswert bio Stage 1 Organic Infant Formula – 500g from Organic Munchkin. Can you provide or point me to prep instructions in English for both?

Also, can you clarify which is preferred formulation? I’m confused!

    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Leslie-
If you reach out to Organic Munchkin, Peter will definitely help you sort this out!

  67. Rachel

Any comment of iron content of 0.7mg in 100ml vs 1.8mg in 180ml in American formula? My baby is exclusively using Lebensert Stage 1 since 2 weeks old. Shall I worry about him having iron deficiency?

    1. maia

This is a good question for your pediatrician (and he could even check your baby’s iron levels to make sure she’s not deficient).

      1. Paula

Hi I also have been supplementing lebenswert formula 1 since week 3 with breast milk. The Dr said the iron is low and will cause my baby a low IQ. He states the iron should be 1.2mg-1.5mg. However, I only see .7mg or 1.8mg in USA formula. I want what’s best for my baby what do you think?

        1. Maia James

Unfortunately we’re not qualified to make that type of decision for your baby specifically, and will have to defer to your pediatrician on this one.

  68. Tarun

Wonderful blog and after reading this I have also decided for Lebenswert. However, when I go to their original website, I do not find mention of this product anywhere. Hence my confusion. Please help. I only see the stage – 1 but no lebenswert on their website.

Link to Website I looked at – http://gb.holle.ch/en_GB/our-products/organic-baby-milk-formula

  69. Helen

It looks like Lebenswert stage 1 is the best choice to go with, but of course it’s also the one that’s not available. With that in mind, which would be the next best thing? Holle stage 1 or Lebenswert stage 2 (I have an 9 month old and would like to wean her from breastfeeding).

    1. Maia James

They are basically identical, but I would probably go with Lebenswert since its milk is biodynamic. In terms of what age Stage 1 vs. 2 is appropriate, I would ask your pediatrician.

      1. Katie

An important note here though that I found in my research is that Holle Demeter Stage 2 vs. Holle Lebenswert Bioland Stage 2 is that *starch derived from corn is an ingredient in the Demeter, however it is NOT an ingredient in the Lebenswert Bioland. This is a notable difference between the stage 2’s when compared across Demeter vs. Lebenswert Bioland. I think if choosing between Demeter or Lebenswert Bioland for stage 2, based on this one ingredient, I would choose Lebenswert Bioland. Otherwise, for stage 2, both Demeter and Lebenswert Bioland have maltodextrin. If maltodextrin is an issue, then yes, I agree that Lebenswert Bioland stage 1 is best choice, as long as you are ok with baby’s iron levels past 6 months(stage 2 supposedly accomodates for higher iron).

  70. kiran

    Hi Maia,

Do we have Hypo allergy version in Holle ?

    Thanks\Kiran S

    1. Maia James

No, HiPP makes one but as far as I know Holle does not.

  71. Betty

    Dear Maia,

I am 32 weeks and live in South America, but will deliver my baby in Europe I had contacted Holle in Germany regarding Lebenswert stage 1, and I was told they do not sell this formula outside Germany. So I am puzzled how everyone is buying from online retailers outside Germany?

Since I am in Europe, I thought I take advantage and buy the formula in bulk to last me for the first 6 months, it is also considerably less expensive to get it from Europe. I found a company http://www.biologisch24.com who carries Lebenswert and was planning to order from this retailer. First how many boxes do I need for the first 6 months? I am also concerned of its shelf life/expiry date.

I am planning to breast feed, but I want to have a back given my past experience of breast feeding.

On a different note, if you were to choose between the honest company formula and Baby’s organic which would you choose?

    Thanks,
    Betty

    1. Maia James

      Hi Betty-
      To answer your questions:
      1) Lebenswert is sold by online retailers buying it from Germany and reselling it. 2) I am not familiar with the biologish24 website you referenced. 3) I am not sure how much formula you need (and I haven’t formula-fed my own kids so can’t even give you anecdotal advice on this!). I would ask your pediatrician. 4) If it were my child, I would go with Baby’s Only Whey formula over Honest Company.
      Congrats and best of luck!

      1. Betty

Thank you so much for your reply Maia.

  72. Robs

Hello there! I need help determining if the formula Holle lebenstwert stage 2 is expired or not. The date at bottom of box is supposed to be the date it was printed or the date “good” by. I’ve received many stage 1 boxes with dates like 26.02.2017. So my understanding was that date on bottom was the expiration or good by date. Please help!

    1. Robs

      ***UPDATE***

Issue was solved. Moral of this story is to always double check when young kids tell you something is expired. Lol

      1. Maia James

        haha, glad it worked out:).

  73. Amy

Any info on calcioitaliano5 on eBay? Selling Lebenswert 1 for a great price.

    1. Maia James

No I am sorry I have not heard of them.

  74. Cindy

Hi. I was wondering what is the difference between stage 1 and 2. I was wondering if I can stick with the holle lebensworth stage 1 for the entire first year and supplement with whatever is missing since it has lactose as a sweetener. Thanks

    1. Maia James

      Hi Cindy-
I do know some parents who stick with stage 1 as long as they are formula-feeding. The big difference is that there is more iron in the stage 2. This is definitely something you should take up with your pediatrician.

  75. Diana B.

wow, never thought this stuff can be so confusing!
From everything I read, it’s obvious that Lebenswert stage 1 is the absolute best choice to go with. But, of course it’s also the one that’s not available. With that in mind, which would be the next best thing? Holle stage 1 or Lebenswert stage 2 (I have an 8 month old).

Also, regarding the issue of skim milk – in the US, we are told that babies need fat…good fat for brain development. From what I am reading about their cows being on pasture etc…does their skim milk (holle) contain more fat that the conventional skim milk in the US? I am trying to figure out why they would specifically use skim milk vs whole milk.

Thanks in advance for your response!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Diana-
I know, it’s all very confusing!

Here’s the fat content per 100ml prepared formula:

      HiPP 1- 3.5g
      Leb 1- 3.1g
      Holle 1- 3.6g

Earth’s Best, for instance, has 5.3g of fat in a 5 oz serving. If I did the math correctly, the fat content is very similar in all 4 products. It seems that Holle 1 actually has a higher fat content than Earth’s Best… Make sense?

  76. roberta

Hi there! I had read a little while back on your recommendation sites and you had listed “beyond organic baby”. However, I don’t see them listed here anymore. Do you not recommend them anymore?, Issues? etc?

    1. Maia James

      Hi Roberta!
Indeed, I’ve removed BOB from our list of recommended formula vendors for the moment–I THOUGHT I was crystal clear on their supply chain, but then became confused again, and until I can get a completely transparent answer from them, I don’t want to make an official recommendation. I still think they are selling the real deal, but if it were my baby, I’d feel more comfortable with Organic Munchkin or Little World Organics for the moment!

      1. Jill

I have ordered from BOB and now I am hesitant. Organic Munchkin is sold out of Lebenswert Stage 1 and LWO’s ordering process gives me so much anxiety! Are there any other trusted sources?

Since Lebenswert Stage 1 is getting extremely difficult to get, I have considered trying Baby’s Only Whey and am awaiting a sample can from them. What is your opinion on this product?

        1. Maia James

          Hi Jill-
At this point, I haven’t vetted any other European formula vendors. I do think Baby’s Only Whey is a good alternative!

      2. Roberta

Thanks Miai for your response. I had placed an order with BOB before my original post and my shipment finally arrived. Im a bit concern since it came directly from a “company” in France. Not sure if its one of BOB’s direct vendors, etc, but it arrived through DHL and I’m wondering if this package went though an Irradiation process since it came from outside the country. Your thoughts please?

        1. Maia James

          Hi Roberta-
My understanding is that Harry (the founder of BOB) is from France, and that they have a company in France they use for their distribution. Unfortunately, I don’t know the answer to the irradiation question!

  77. Mike

Our son has done great on the Lebenswert Stage 1! However, he is now 6 months old and we are wondering if we should move on from Stage 1. Unfortunately the Stage 2 goes back to maltodextrin though. We are having a hard time finding accurate ingredient and nutritional information on Stage 2.
We ask ourselves if our son will be missing out on important nutrients if we just keep him on Stage 1?
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Mike-
I know, I hate that the stage 2 has maltodextrin! If it were my baby I would probably just keep him on stage 1, but that’s definitely a question for your pediatrician!

      1. Mike

        Thanks for the reply Maia!
We actually have an appointment with our pediatrician this week, so I will be sure to ask!

        1. Rose Weinstein

Did you ever find an answer to this? Wondering the same!

  78. maia

I definitely know people who do this! But still you should ask your pediatrician.

  79. Rebekah

I’m wondering if it would be Ok to continue feeding my 4 month old Holle Lebenswert Stage 1 past 6 months? Baby does so well on it.

  80. Anthony T.

Also, I’ve been giving my child fennel and ginger tea brewed fresh for his gas… And the holle formula I use boiled water that is left to room temp is this ok? Parenting is tough!

  81. Anthony T

    Hi-

Thanks for the info great stuff! New father and feeding my angel is so important to me! Currently using holle Demeter and he likes it but he does spit up and is always gasy, fartjng, and strains when he has to poop. Is this normal? Doc and everyone i ask says it is especially the gas etc because he’s only 6 weeks old still… True? Or could it be the holle? Wife breast feeds a tiny bit she just can’t make enough and he eats anywhere from 4-6 ounces every 3-4 hours, it varies with him…. He’s tough bugger.. Should I switch him to the new holle? He also takes probiotic powder every night about 10 billion per serving. It’s helped with the gas, but still he is either always hungry and fuzzy. I currently get my holle off ebay from someone ive been dealing with for a long time and they have the new brand. Any suggestions? Thank you all!!

    1. maia

      Hi there!
If it were my baby, I would choose Holle’s Lebenswert Stage 1 formula. In terms of the gas/constipation, these are issues I would definitely bring up to a pediatrician you trust and follow his/her advice!

  82. Tiffany

Im using Hipp organic biocombatic first infant milk on my 3 month old and i loooove it!! Working so well for my baby.it smells and taste good and mixes beautifully! The first organic formula i tried was Earths Best with DHA. It was horrible! Smells like fish and made my baby so sick crying for 6 hours straight with bad gas.then we tried Baby’s Only it was way better but she still had gas.it was hard to digest, that formula didnt mix well and i beleive that was the problem it was a bit gritty. Then i read about Hipp and Holle so tried Hipp biocombatic first infant milk and its been awsome! Working so good for my baby. But i been reading about Holles new lebenswert infant formula stage 1 and thinking to give it a try.it seems more animal friendly? As im a vegetarian i like that! Could you please tell me the differance between Hipp biocombatic first infant milk and Holle Lebenswert infant milk stage 1. Im from canada so bolth is hard to get,i been ordering hipp from Tora Foods and so far its been fast and good!

    1. maia

      Hi Tiffany-
This post should help explain some of the differences among these various European formulas: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/hipp-versus-holle-which-european-infant-formula-is-healthier/

  83. SB

    Hi Maia,

Thank you for all the info on formulas. I am breastfeeding and supplementing my 1 month old with formula. We just switched to Holle Lebenswert stage 1. I notice that Holle Lebenswert stage 1 formula contains fluoride in it. What is your take on that?

    1. Maia James

      Hi SB-
When I looked into this I was told that the fluoride listed is naturally-occurring (from the milk used), not added to the formula. Still, I always tell my clients to use a fluoride filter in the water they use to mix formula! This is the one I use: https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/store/under-counter-three-stage-water-filter/

  84. Bree

    Hi!

Thanks for all your amazing research. It is so helpful! I haven’t been keeping up w/my 3 month old’s appetite and finally ordered Lebenswert from Beyond Organic Baby … everything seems legit with them, the box came only a few days after I placed my order. When i opened the outer shipping box though, I discovered 4 of the 5 boxes of formula were not sealed on the bottom. This could just be from the glue losing adherence due to temperature or something (?). I’m not sure if I should be concerned. I mean, if it were a scam, they could alway open up the bottom of the box carefully and re-glue it anyway, right? The bag inside the box is a silver foil-type bag like some crackers come in. Does this sound right? I wish there was a way to test formula to at least make sure it’s safe, even if it is just come crappy formula. Any thoughts much appreciated!

    1. Maia James

I understand your desire to confirm that what’s in the box is what it says it is! Unfortunately, I have no way to guarantee anything. All I can say is that I’ve talked to Lacey numerous times, and seen receipts from the orders she has placed for this formula. I would personally feel comfortable feeding my baby formula I bought from LWO.

      1. bree

I didn’t order from LWO, just because I was getting nervous about not having enough supply so ordered from Beyond Organic Baby to ensure I would get it. Would you trust it? I’m so nervous to give it to her. I’m supplementing with Honest Co. formula in the meantime.

        Thank you!

        1. Maia James

Yup! I would indeed trust BOB if it were my baby:)

        2. Melissa

I ordered from them and yes they are legit and that’s what the packaging looks like!

  85. Kate Norem

We are going to start supplementing with formula. For my seven month old who has never has formula before would you recommend Holle 2 or Lebenswert 1? Can you tell me why?

    1. Maia James

      Hi Kate,
If it were my baby, I would do Lebenswert because it doesn’t contain maltodextrin or other plant-based sweeteners.

  86. ashley

I have been using Holle Lebenswert 1 for the past month or so for my 4 1/2 month old, after reading your reviews on it. I had my daughters check up last night and my doc was not happy about the “skimmed milk” ingredient, stating that all babies under 1 need the fat from whole milk. Have you heard about this or have any insight? I really want to speak to someone, but not sure who.

    Thanks in advance!
    ashley

    1. Maia James

I’m sorry, Ashley, but I really would have to defer to your pediatrician on this. My best advice would be to get a second opinion from another pediatrician.

  87. Cheapest price for Holle Lebenswert 1 in the USA. Shipping from NYC. Maia James please prove I’m legit because not all parents can afford a 28, 32, or 35 dollar box of formula.

    Thank You

  88. jim alonso

Thank you for all the wonderful research. Thanks to your hard work, it made formula selection for me so much easier – bio leberswert #1 all the way. Along those lines, my sister-in-law lives in Germany and she just had a baby about a month ago. The Germany healthcare system provides a doula for post-hospital support to all interested citizens and the “consensus” is that the PRE version of the formula is the way to go (regardless of brands) and that number 1 is the follow on. Oddly enough, the hospitals use aptamil pre and it’s much more expensive than the organic stuff, so i’m not sure where that fits into the equation. Regardless, I can’t find any source to confirm PRE use on any US sites or where to buy this level of formula should it turn out to be better. Have you heard about this in your travels? Thanks again.

p.s. If organicmunkin turns out to be genuine, it would make buying formula substantially cheaper and easier. No more product limits and no more invisible/visible forms adjusted daily. Fingers crossed on the vetting !!

    1. Maia James

Hi Jim! I am sorry, but I don’t know anything about PRE formulas…I dug around a little after seeing this comment, and asked some of the European formula “experts” I know for insights, and came up empty. Aptamil isn’t organic (as I’m sure you know), so I don’t typically recommend that one. I wish I could be more helpful re PRE formula, but I’m going to keep digging and report back if I discover anything.

I do have some good news though–Organic Munchkin is legit, so I would feel comfortable buying formula from them here: http://goo.gl/EG9HNB

      1. Katya

I am also interested in learning more about Pre formulas. Can’t seem to find any info on the difference between stage 1 and Pre.
Organicmunchkin.com is a great website. Can’t say the same about littleworldorganics.com littleworldorgqnics formulas are overpriced and unfortunately Lacey is always short in stock. On the other hand, I ordered several times from Peter and their formulas are definitely authentic. My mom brought Holle from Europe when she visited us and I was able to compare to the one from the website. Identical.

  89. Maia James

Here is some info on the different stages that should be helpful:

  90. tiare

    Hi Maia,

Thank you for all the great info!!! Thank God for the Internet in getting crucial info out instantaneously!!

I was told that I could continue using Lebenswert 1 without having to switch to stages 2-3, is this correct? Why have different stages for Holle & Lebenswert?

    Thanks!!

  91. oxana

    Hi Maia!

I love your blog! The research that have been done on formulas is a real eye opener!

If you are still researching the online retailers that sell Holle and Hippie can you please verify if organicmanchkin.com is the trustworthy seller? (If you haven’t done so already)

    Thanks a lot!
    Oxana

    1. Maia James

      Hi Oxana-
We actually just had a conversation with the folks at organicmunchkin.com and are just waiting on some proofs of purchase from them. So far, it seems like a totally legit operation.

  92. Hi Maia James….Thank you soo much for replying me back!!..im so in love withur page…im ordering diapers and all the good stuff from ur page…thankus soo much…I was going to try some cleaning supplies and wipes from honest but im concern they use some harm chemicals …it is little price but kind of convenient the bundle thing where you get a discount …but I will rather get better stuff for my baby and house for your recommendations !!;)…one little question if u can help me out…I received the holle lebenswert stage 1 milk for my baby he 4 months old 🙂
..but I dont understand the directions or im confuse I think bc it says to give for 5 ounces = to use 5 scoops of milk…do you know if this is correct? ?..since in our regular instruction here in USA formula we use for 2 oz od water = 1scoop of formula! :)…in hope you can help me ….thankus for everything! ! Have an awesome week…buy the way ur babies are gorgeous !;)

    1. Maia James

      Hi Angie-
Thanks so much for the kind words:). I am sorry but I do not know the answer to your questions on mixing the formula–I would ask whoever you bought it from:).

  93. Hi Maia…I’m super happy with ur website I’m a Latina mom and I’m definitely happy to be able to find good and better stuff for my jr!!:) Your web is amazing!! Thank you for all the research you do for us …I know probably you already talked about this but I’m concern about the X-ray routine this milk packages (hole & hipp) go trough and there is people stating since the milk is X-rated is not longer good anymore…do u know anything about that !!?is is dangerous for our babies?…also do u recommend hipp for stage 2 or do know if hole and hipp are the same regarding : “maltodextrin”…Do u know if aluminum levels do44are less now or is the same!!:) once more thanks …and thank you for the products u sell…I’m ordering diapers and wipes from ur web…is amazing!! Love it …love organic stuff:)

Thanks so much, Angie, for your kind words about my site. My research suggests that the x-rays are not a concern. Here’s more on that: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/01/12/145107755/why-x-rayed-food-isnt-radioactive-and-other-puzzles.

If you want to avoid maltodextrin, HiPP does not contain it. I don’t have updated numbers on the aluminum issue–I hope to be able to track this down!

  94. Hi Maia…I’m super happy with ur website I’m a Latina mom and I’m definitely happy to be able to find good and better stuff for my jr!!:) Your web is amazing!! Thank you for all the research you do for us …I know probably already talk about this but I’m concern about the X-ray routine this milk packages (hole & hope) go trough and there is people stating since the milk is X-rated is not longer good anymore…do u know anything about that !!?is is dangerous for our babies?…also do u recommend hipp for stage 2 or do know if hole and hoop are the same regarding : “maltodetrix”…Do u know if aluminum levels are less now or is the same!!:) once more thanks …and thank you for the products u sell…I’m ordering diapers and wipes from ur web…is amazing!! Love it …love organic 🙂

    Hi,

I was wondering what the inside packaging is like for Lebenswert? I know the holle stage 2 comes in two portioned packages in the box, which allowed me to not waste formula when only using it once per day. It does expire after 2 weeks so 2 packages allowed 1 box to last a month for us.

    Thank you ,
    Laura

    1. Maia James

      Hi Laura-
There is 1 foil pouch inside that makes about 166 fluid ounces of formula.
      Thanks!

I’ve been feeding holle stage 1 since my son was born, I want to change his formula to the new stage 1 holle formula, how should I go about doing so?

    1. Maia James

Hi there! Not sure I understand the question, but sounds like it’s probably something to ask your pediatrician:). Thanks!

    Hello Maia,

We were fortunate enough to get Lebenswert from the great team at LittleWorldOrganics. Unfortunately, our son has not done well with it. He has quite a bit of gas and is crying all day and constantly straining to push it out. We tried Gripe Water to help him but it didn’t work. We spoke to our pediatrician who recommended Mylicon as a first try, that didn’t work either. She finally recommended we switch to Similac Alimentum, which we did not want to do but she verified that he should not be crying and straining as much as he does. Out of desperation, we tried the Alimentum and it definitely worked so we’re thinking it may be that our son is lactose intolerant. Is there another version of Holle/Lebenswert that you would recommend as an alternative to Alimentum? Thanks!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Charlie-
I’m sorry to hear about your son’s trouble with Lebenswert! I am neither a doctor nor a nutritionist, so my only suggestion is to have your doctor look into the ingredients of the other “Good Stuff” formulas (which, by definition are typically not soy-based) and see if he/she thinks the ingredients would be appropriate. Check out the Safe Infant Formula Guide for those brands. (And you could ask about Baby’s Only soy formula too). https://gimmethegoodstuff.org/safe-product-guides/safe-infant-formula-guide/

    Hi,
I tried to give my 3 weeks old Lebenswert 1 twice in addition to BM. However, on both occasions he spat up, and on the second occasion he cried a lot even after spitting which made me believe his stomach did not take the formula well. Could you recommend an alternative? I hate to say but my son gets Enfamil twice a day and every passing day makes me uncomfortable. I heard that Baby’s Only is not that great on stomach either (many reported cases on constipation). Another reason I want to be cautious is that I dont want to be changing formula again and again.

    Thanks a lot.

    1. I would ask your pediatrician about the stomach sensitivity (and what ingredients might be best for that specific issue), but the formulas that I think are Good Stuff are Baby’s Only, Honest, HiPP, Holle, and Lebenswert. Best of luck!

    2. Tiffany

This is a late reply as i just found this website, but i would try the Hipp organic combiotic first infant milk.My baby was so sick from other organic formulas and this one worked best for her!

  99. Alder

I’ve used Hipp with with now 14 month old and loved it, but I’m expecting another baby this month and considering lebenswert because of aluminum levels found in Hipp. Although I’ve read that it has less fat content as Hipp and stage 1 Holle. Should this be cause for concern? Also, the study that tested aluminum in European formulas didn’t include Holle, so thinking it might be relatively high as well seeing as how the packaging is similar. What are your thoughts on this?

    1. Maia James

I would ask your pediatrician about the fat and if he/she thinks it’s a problem for your baby. And yes, I agree that there is a good chance HiPP and Holle have similar aluminum levels because of seemingly-identical packaging, although contamination could happen at some other point in the production process. I’m hoping that Holle will do some independent testing at some point and reveal the results!

The use of maltodextrin is so the milk is not too sweet and better for babies with lactose sensitivities. If your baby had only a mild sensitivity to lactose it might not be as evident with Holle, where with Lebenswert it might be. We offer both on our website. http://www.barebottoms.us

I am trying to purchase lebenswert stage 1 help!!

  101. Amy

Hi! My six month old son has been on Holle 1 just about since birth and has done great. However, I’d love to transition him to Lebenswert since it does not contain maltodextrin (I know this now thanks to YOU!). My question is whether there’s any chance he might be sensitive to the lactose in Lebenswert? He was quite a gassy baby but not so much anymore, so I’m scared to rock the boat. Do you think that if he’s done fine on Holle 1 that he would do fine on Lebenswert? I am thinking that if he was truly lactose intolerant that it would have shown up in his digestion of Holle 1? Thanks!

    1. Maia James

So sorry for the delay! I just saw this comment. Did you try switching to Lebenswert?

    2. Erin

We’re transitioning our son from Holle Stage 1 to Lebenswert… right now we’re at 50/50 mixture. He was initially definitely gassier than normal and just a tiny bit fussy but it’s normalizing now! His poops are looser but I think that’s because, according to our doc, lactose keep things moving through your system (by design… that’s why breast milk has lactose…)

Holle Stage 1 was AWESOME too BTW (everyone commented on how he had so little tummy issues…). I also think the Dr Brown bottles helped with that…

      I hope this helps!

  102. Allison

Great article! I have heard there is some arsenic in the brown rice syrup base used in Holle and other baby formulas. Have you done any analysis on that? Thanks in advance!

    1. Maia

      Hi Allison-
There isn’t brown rice syrup in Holle formula (including Lebenswert). Brown rice syrup is found in Baby’s Only formula, but it contains undetectable levels of arsenic. Their new whey formula doesn’t contain it at all. Thanks!

  103. Sarah

Thanks for always keeping the formula info up-to-date for us! I’ve read all of your articles about Hipp/Holle. I have been using Hipp Stage 2 because of the probiotics Hipp has and the maltodextrin I didn’t want from Holle. What’s your opinion about the probiotics in hipp? Are they providing a significant benefit? Thanks again!

    1. Maia

      Hi Sarah-
I do think they probably provide a benefit, but if you wanted to go with Holle for the other reasons it is superior, you could supplement with probiotic drops.

      1. kiran

        Hi Maia,

What is the name of the probiotic drops? or a link ?

        Thanks\Kiran S

        1. Maia James

          Hi Kiran-
          Here’s one: http://amzn.to/1QaEcIG

  104. Anthony

Why is it that the new formula is always cheaper and has 100g more per box? I would think it would be more money?

Is it safe to say the new formula is better than the old for stage 1?

What should we buy for stage 2 and 3? Is there a difference between old and new for 2 and 3?

    Thank you! Love the posts!

    1. Maia James

      Hi Anthony-
I am not sure why there are the price differences–some of it has to do with the shipping costs, which depends on which European retailer the importer is buying from. I indeed prefer Lewbenswert Stage 1 to Holle Stage 1, and for 2 and 3 I think they are about the same. I personally would feel comfortable feeding my baby Lebenswert Stage 1 (or any stage 1 formula) for the duration of the time they received formula. Here’s an article that may be helpful: http://www.hipp.co.uk/Blog/post/Follow-on-milks-e28093-to-feed-or-not-to-feed.aspx

      1. Kristyn Morrisv

This link isn’t longer available. But from what I gather, you think the Lebenswert stage 1 is appropriate for all age babies? I would use formula up until about 12-16 months old. Will the baby get all the nutrition and calories needed by just staying with Lebenswert stage 1?

        1. Maia

You’re correct that I would feel comfortable doing this if it were my baby, but I am not a doctor so I recommend you run this by a pediatrician.

          1. Natalie Black

We used the Lebeswert stage 1 from 2 months on. At five and a half months our son became very disinterested in the bottle, which could have been for several age appropriate reasons. We started our son on the Holle Stage 2 (our choice after careful consideration) after a few weeks of him eating half to 3/4 of his usual bottle, and he immediately was back to his regular number of ounces. This made me think that he may have needed the next step formula, just as Breast Milk adjusts to accommodate the needs of the nursing child. I am not a doctor, this is just my opinion.

        2. Lisa

I’ve been feeding my baby Lebenswert Stage 1 starting 9 mos. old and decided to go with this b/c of the lactose ingredient instead of maltodextrin. He is 10.5 mos. now and he still take the bottle really well. But since he’s more active I am currently debating whether or not I should switch to Stage 2 or 3. Does it have more calories or nutrients for an older infant?

    2. Imran

Per my little research, Demeter does not allow its cows to be dehorned whereas Bioland has no such restrictions, which might affect the microscopic structure (Hagalis crystal analysis of milk) of milk and hence the difference in price, I guess.

      1. Amanda

Extremely happy with Lebenswert. My baby is is so much happier with it and no constipation! I love that this formula doesn’t produce bubbles when shaking it up like US brands. I ordered a couple boxes from a US based supplier first to make sure baby liked it. I then ordered from http://www.maluma-green.com and even with shipping costs saved compared to the US supplier.

        1. Lilly

Yes, I am also very satisfied with http://www.maluma-green.com/
Laura, the customer service manager is so friendly and helpful. My son is doing very well on the Lebenswert formula. All American made formulas contain soy, and I did not want to feed my son that.

        2. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I had a hard time to find a reliable source for getting Holle formula for my little daughter. Today I received my first shipment from http://www.maluma-green.com and I am extremly satisfied. My order arrived within 2 weeks and they added a lot of free samples:)

Hi! We just had our baby earlier this week and are struggling with having our son latch. I did order 2 boxes of Holle Lebenswert but wanted to know if we need to supplement with DHA? Thanks!

    1. Maia

Congrats on the birth of your baby! I personally wouldn’t feel the need to supplement with DHA, but that is a question for your pediatrician, and one that I am not qualified to answer.

    2. Diana

We purchase Lebenswert stage 1 and 2 from http://www.organicbabyfood24.com and couldn’t be happier with the products received.
This company is wonderful! I had an issue with delivery of my first order, it was accidentally left outside the wrong apartment, and they reimbursed my entire cost. I was so pleased with their customer service that I felt more than comfortable going back to them for future orders – they follow through on their commitment to offer quality products and ship them to the US with no hassle, and it’s made all the difference!
It’s by far the best formula we’ve tried (and we’ve tried quite a few organic formulas from the US). It dissolves easilly, and it’s friendly on our little one’s digestive system. In terms of cost, the total including shipping costs, is quite comparable to what I was paying for organic formula here in the States, so the choice for us to keep going back to Organic Baby was an easy one!

      1. Dana Zabel

Did you still need to boil the water before mixing?

        1. Amber

I have been using Lebenswert stage one for several months now and have never boiled the water. However, I do buy purified water. If I were using water from the tap, I would boil it just to make sure there was no bacteria and such. This formula mixes super easy in any temperature. You don’t really even have to shake it. I just swirl it around a bit and it mixes great. Very different from formulas I used with my first baby.

  106. Molly

Is there anyway to get a list of ingredients for the stage 2 and 3 Lebenswert? From what I can find, I think it still has the maltodextrin. Thanks!

    1. Maia James

Yes, Molly, you are correct. Only Stage 1 doesn’t include maltodextrin, but in rereading my blog post I didn’t make that clear. I’ve updated it now! Thanks!

    2. julia

Hey Molly! We just switched to Lebenswert too after our daughter having a bad reaction to two other organic brands. She is on stage 1 no and we are loving it, no reaction she has gained weight and is super happy! Have you tried Stage 2 and 3? Are they just as amazing as Stage 1? Would love to hear your feedback. We are buying it from http://www.organicbabyfood.shop and are super happy with the prices and fast delivery. Such a shame you cannot buy it in stores yet. Anyways thanks for your feedback! Greetings from Cali. Julia
